A baby's skin is thin, its protective barrier is not yet fully developed, and babies often open their eyes or cry during bath time — so a baby wash & shampoo has to be considerably milder than an adult product. Parents look at three things: does it sting the eyes, does it dry the skin, and is the ingredient list easy to understand. Technically, that means choosing mild cleansers, a pH close to skin, a very light scent or none at all, and a preservative system that meets the specific conditions for products used on children under 3. The safety dossier must also include an assessment specific to this age group. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula to a labeled finished product with its cosmetic product notification.

Formula base

A mild cleansing system, skin-near pH, a short ingredient list

Baby wash & shampoo uses a blend of several mild surfactants to reduce irritation, along with thickeners that do not rely on high salt levels.

Cleansers

Glucosides (coco, decyl), amphoacetates, betaines, glutamates — moderate lather, low eye sting.

Thickening and conditioning

PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, glycerin and a light polyquaternium so baby's hair is easy to comb.

Gentle extracts

Chamomile, calendula, oat, aloe vera — moderate levels, with safety documentation.

Preservation

Sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, glyceryl caprylate — meeting the conditions for children under 3.

Key technical points

Four things that determine baby wash & shampoo quality

Low eye sting

A blend of amphoteric and non-ionic cleansers at near-neutral pH; evaluated on samples before a "low eye sting" claim is made.

Doesn't dry the skin

A moderate total surfactant level, with glycerin and emollients.

Preservation suited to the age group

Some preservatives are restricted or not permitted for children under 3; the preservative system is challenge-tested on the final formula.

A very light scent

Fragrance-free or a low level of a children's fragrance; fragrance allergens are declared on the label above the threshold.

Three formulation directions

Three common baby wash & shampoo lines

2-in-1 wash & shampoo

One bottle from head to toe; a popular line because it is convenient for parents.

Vietnamese herbal

Traditional bathing leaves such as green tea, Vietnamese balm and betel leaf, as standardized extracts.

Dry, sensitive skin

Fragrance-free, with added oat and plant oils, slightly acidic pH; a short ingredient list.

Packaging designed alongside the formula

One-handed pump bottles, refill pouches; shatterproof bottles with closures that are hard for children to open.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

pH
Measured on the solution and after aging.
Viscosity
Across temperatures, so the pump dispenses evenly.
Foaming
Foam height and stability measured against a reference sample.
Microbiology
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, using the criteria for children's products.
Preservative performance
Preservative efficacy (challenge) test on the final formula.
Heavy metals
Tested on the finished product for products intended for children.
Color and odor
Stable after aging; no fading under light.
Packaging compatibility
Monitoring pumps, leakage and bottle deformation.

Claims

Writing claims within the cosmetic scope

Children's products call for cautious wording; avoid absolute promises and phrases like "chemical-free". Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the cosmetic product notification.

Instead of: antibacterial for babies.

Directions and warnings

Avoid contact with eyes; if contact occurs, rinse with water; keep out of reach of children.
