Body care
Body wash OEM/ODM manufacturing
Body Wash · Shower Gel · OEM/ODM
Body wash is used every day, sold in large sizes and repurchased regularly — which makes it the core line for many body care brands. Consumers choose a body wash mainly on two impressions: the scent when they open the cap, and how their skin feels after showering — clean but not dry and tight, with no greasy film. Behind those two impressions lies a full formulation challenge: the cleansing system must be mild enough for the whole body, the lather must be rich and fine, the viscosity must stay stable once fragrance is added, and the cost per liter must suit the sales channel. Butter-C provides full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development, fragrance selection and testing to labeled finished goods with the cosmetic product notification.
Formula base
Cleansing system, conditioning agents and fragrance
A body wash formula consists of four groups of ingredients. The ratio between them determines lather, mildness, after-shower skin feel and cost.
Primary surfactant
Sodium Laureth Sulfate for abundant lather at a reasonable cost; amino acid surfactants (Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate) or glucosides for mild, sulfate-free lines.
Co-surfactants
Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate — refine the lather, reduce the impact of the primary surfactant on skin and build viscosity.
Conditioning agents
Glycerin, plant oils, shea butter, and cationic polymers that deposit on skin after rinsing (Polyquaternium-7, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride) — for a soft feel without dryness or tightness.
Fragrance and highlights
Fragrance often decides whether consumers buy again, and makes up 0.5–1.5% of the formula. Plant extracts, microcapsule beads and pearlescence create visual differentiation.
Key technical points
Four factors that determine the quality of a body wash
Stable viscosity
Viscosity is built with salt or polymers. Fragrance and extracts shift the viscosity curve, so viscosity is adjusted after the fragrance is finalized, not before.
Lather and rinse feel
Rich, fine lather that forms quickly even in hard water; rinses off quickly without feeling greasy or squeaky. The ratio of primary to secondary surfactants determines this.
Mildness for the whole body
pH 5–6.5; just enough total surfactant; conditioning agents to replenish the lipids washed away. Lines for dry and sensitive skin need a gentler cleansing system.
Fragrance longevity
Fragrances are chosen to withstand the surfactant environment and pH of the base; fragrance longevity on skin after showering and scent stability after aging tests are checked.
Three formulation directions
Three common types of body wash
Moisturizing body wash
Opaque creamy or pearlescent texture with nourishing oils and butters; suits dry climates and dry skin; often the hero product of a body care line.
Clear shower gel
A clear gel with abundant lather and a clean, cool feel; suits hot, humid climates, active people and oily skin. Easy to color and add decorative beads.
Mild, sulfate-free body wash
Amino acid or glucoside system, skin-friendly pH, lightly fragranced or fragrance-free; for sensitive skin, dry skin and older adults.
Packaging is planned with the formula
500 ml–1 liter pump bottles, flip-top bottles, refill pouches. Viscosity must suit the pump; plastics and gaskets must withstand high fragrance concentrations.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- pH
- Measured directly at 25°C; kept within the agreed range to be gentle on skin while ensuring the preservative system remains effective.
- Viscosity
- Measured with a rotational viscometer at 25°C; also checked after aging tests, since body wash viscosity tends to change over time.
- Foaming ability
- Foam height and stability, measured by a standard method and compared with the approved sample.
- Surfactant content
- Tracked against the formula and tested in the finished product to keep the cleansing feel consistent between batches.
- Stability
- Freeze–thaw cycling and storage at 40°C; separation, color change, odor change and viscosity drift are tracked.
- Microbiology and preservative challenge
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test per ISO 11930.
- Fragrance allergens
- Checked against the fragrance supplier's composition data; any allergen above the labeling threshold is added to the ingredient list.
- Packaging compatibility
- Filled into the exact bottles and pouches to be used; pump force, leakage, staining and plastic softening by fragrance are checked.
