A pot of hair-washing water brewed from soap pod, pomelo peel and holy basil is a hair care memory shared by generations of Vietnamese women, and herbal shampoo brings that memory into a bottle that is easy to use every day. Buyers of this category look for something familiar and natural: an herbal scent, a characteristic brown color, and soft, smooth hair after washing. Behind that are specific formulation challenges: herbal extracts darken and form sediment over time, the raw botanical odor has to be balanced with fragrance, and the cleansing base must be mild enough to fit the natural story while still removing scalp oil. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from extract selection and formula development to labeled finished goods and the cosmetic product notification dossier.

Formula base

Cleansing base, herbal extracts and hair conditioners

An herbal shampoo still needs a stable cleansing base; the herbal extracts provide the story, the color and the signature scent.

Cleansing base

Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine for mass-market lines; amino acid, isethionate and glucoside surfactants for sulfate-free lines that fit a natural positioning.

Herbal extracts

Soap pod, soapberry (natural cleansing saponins), pomelo peel, holy basil, ginger, green tea, goosegrass — used as standardized extracts for batch-to-batch consistency.

Hair conditioners

Cationic polymers (Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-10), Panthenol, hydrolyzed proteins — less tangling, softer hair, easier combing.

Fragrance and essential oils

Pomelo peel, holy basil, lemongrass and rosemary essential oils balanced against the botanical odor of the extracts, so the herbal scent is never too strong.

Key technical points

Four factors that determine herbal shampoo quality

No sediment

Herbal extracts contain tannins and polysaccharides that readily precipitate with surfactants and cationic polymers. Extracts are filtered, and their concentration and order of addition are chosen so the shampoo stays uniformly clear or opaque with nothing settling at the bottom.

Stable color

The brown of herbal extracts darkens with time and light; chelating agents, antioxidants and opaque packaging keep the color consistent from batch to batch.

A pleasant herbal scent

The raw botanical odor is rebalanced with essential oils and fragrance so users recognize the herbs without finding the scent harsh.

Clean scalp without dry hair

The ratio of cleansing agents to conditioning polymers is evaluated on oily scalps as well as long and chemically treated hair.

Three formulation directions

Three common herbal shampoo lines

Soap pod – pomelo peel shampoo

A very familiar traditional story; soap pod cleanses and pomelo peel gives the signature scent. Suitable for all ages.

Sulfate-free herbal shampoo

Amino acid or glucoside base, moderate lather, gentle on sensitive scalps; a more premium positioning.

Cooling herbal shampoo

Mint, holy basil and ginger for a cooling or warming sensation; suited to men and oily scalps.

Packaging designed with the formula

Opaque or dark bottles help preserve the herbal color; large pump bottles for families, refill pouches for repeat purchases.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

pH
Measured at 25°C; kept in a range that is mild for the scalp and suits the preservative system.
Viscosity
Measured with a rotational viscometer at 25°C; rechecked after adding extracts and fragrance.
Color and clarity
Compared with the reference sample after aging tests and light exposure; monitored for darkening, haze and sediment.
Foaming
Foam height and stability, also evaluated in the presence of oil on hair.
Conditioning performance
Evaluated on hair tresses: slip during rinsing and ease of wet and dry combing.
Microbiology and preservative challenge
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; herbal extracts are a microbial source that needs incoming inspection.
Heavy metals
Botanical extracts are a source that needs control; checked against certificates of analysis and tested on the finished product.
Packaging compatibility
Monitored for bottle wall staining, pump force and leakage.

Claims

Writing claims within cosmetic scope

Herbal hair washing is often linked to promises of hair growth or darker hair — claims outside the scope of a shampoo. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the cosmetic product notification.
