Body lotion is applied over a very large area of skin, so how it feels matters as much as what it does. In a hot, humid climate, users want a moisturizer that absorbs right away, does not stick to clothes or look greasy, yet keeps skin soft all day. The local market also values two more things: a scent that lingers on the skin and a brighter-looking complexion. Delivering all three while staying compliant is the formulation lab's task: a light emulsifier system, dry oils, non-sticky humectants, and only brightening actives on the permitted list. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development and testing to labeled finished product with its notification dossier.

Formula base

A light emulsion, humectants and actives

Body lotion is usually an oil-in-water emulsion in the form of a fluid milk or a light cream, so it spreads quickly over large areas of skin.

Emulsifiers and thickeners

Non-ionic emulsifiers combined with gelling polymers (Carbomer, Acrylates copolymer) for a thin, fast-absorbing milk; fatty alcohols for a richer cream in lines for dry skin.

Humectants

Glycerin, Urea, Sodium PCA, Hyaluronic Acid — hold water in the stratum corneum; Urea at moderate levels helps soften rough skin.

Oils and emollients

Dry oils, light esters and silicones for a dry-touch feel; shea butter and plant oils for intensive moisturizing lines.

Actives and fragrance

Niacinamide, Alpha-Arbutin (maximum 0.5% in body lotions), plant extracts for brightening lines; Panthenol, Allantoin for gentle lines; fragrance is the signature of many brands.

Key technical points

Four factors that define body lotion quality

Fast absorption, no stickiness

Low oil content, dry oils and volatile silicones, non-tacky humectants; dry-down time and after-feel are assessed after a few minutes under hot, humid conditions.

No pilling, no white cast

A lotion reapplied several times a day must not pill; tone-enhancing lines with pigments must spread evenly, leave no white streaks and not transfer excessively to clothing.

Stability in large bottles

250–500 ml bottles are used over a long period; the emulsion must not separate, discolor or change odor when opened repeatedly at room temperature.

Compliant brightening actives

Only actives on the permitted list, within concentration limits; brightening lines are additionally tested for banned substances commonly found in adulterated creams.

Three formulation directions

Three common body lotion lines

Moisturizing body milk

A fluid milk, fast-absorbing, pleasantly scented; for daily use on all skin types. A core line that sells easily across many channels.

Brightening body lotion

Niacinamide, Alpha-Arbutin, plant extracts; pigments can be added for an instant brightening effect. It must be clear which is an instant effect and which is a result after several weeks.

Body lotion for dry, rough skin

A richer cream with Urea, shea butter and ceramides; suited to elbows, shins and dry seasons.

Packaging is planned with the formula

Pump bottles, flip-top bottles, tubes, jars. Viscosity must suit the pump; lines with pigments need packaging that keeps the powder from settling at the bottom.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors while developing the formula and scaling it up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

pH
Measured at 25°C; kept close to skin pH and within the stable range of the actives.
Viscosity
Measured with a rotational viscometer at 25°C; determines pumpability and how the lotion spreads.
Emulsion stability
Centrifugation, freeze–thaw cycling, storage at 40°C; separation, color change and odor change are monitored.
On-skin assessment
Dry-down time, tackiness, shine, white cast, pilling on reapplication.
Microbiology and preservative efficacy
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test per ISO 11930.
Banned substances (brightening lines)
Finished product is tested for mercury, hydroquinone and corticosteroids to provide a basis for market release.
Sun protection values (if any)
SPF and PA are stated only after being measured on the finished product according to test standards.
Packaging compatibility
Filled into the actual bottle to be used; pump force, clogging, fragrance absorption and staining are checked.
