Sensitive toothpaste OEM/ODM manufacturing
Sensitive Toothpaste · Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth · OEM/ODM
The sharp twinge from iced water, ice cream or sour foods leads many people to seek out a dedicated toothpaste and stay loyal to it for a long time. Toothpaste for sensitive teeth differs from regular toothpaste in two ways: it contains actives that help reduce sensitivity with regular daily use, and the base must be gentle — low abrasivity, mild foaming agents and a mint flavor that is not harsh. Each active has its own mechanism, limits and labeling requirements, so the choice of active shapes both the formula and the dossier. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula to labeled finished goods with a cosmetic product notification dossier.
Formula base
A gentle paste base with actives for sensitive teeth
Sensitive toothpaste uses a familiar toothpaste base, adjusted to be gentler, with one or two actives for sensitive teeth.
Actives for sensitive teeth
Potassium nitrate, strontium chloride, hydroxyapatite, arginine with calcium carbonate — each works differently and is chosen to fit the positioning.
Fluoride
Sodium fluoride or stannous fluoride, with total fluorine within permitted limits and the mandatory warning.
Low abrasivity
Low-abrasion silica to avoid further wear on already sensitive tooth surfaces.
Gentle base
Mild foaming agents or SLS-free, mild mint flavor, sorbitol and glycerin as humectants.
Key technical points
Four factors that define sensitive toothpaste quality
Actives compatible with the base
Strontium and stannous ions readily precipitate with phosphates and carbonates; stannous fluoride needs a low-water base. Compatible systems are chosen from the start.
Assay on every batch
Fluoride and the main active are assayed in the finished product, at release and after aging.
Low abrasivity, gentle feel
Abrasivity of the abrasive is assessed; SLS and harsh flavors are kept to a minimum.
Compliant labeling
Fluoride warning; for strontium chloride, also state "Contains strontium chloride" and "Frequent use by children is not advisable".
Three formulation directions
Three common sensitive toothpaste lines
Potassium nitrate and fluoride
The most common line, for daily use; mild mint flavor.
Stannous fluoride
One active for both cavity protection and sensitive teeth; needs a low-water base.
Fluoride-free with hydroxyapatite
For those who prefer to avoid fluoride; a story built on a mineral similar to tooth enamel.
Packaging must be planned with the formula
Multi-layer moisture-barrier tubes for stannous fluoride lines; cartons with mandatory warnings clearly printed.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
Below are the parameters Butter-C tracks during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Fluoride content
- Total and available fluoride, at release and after aging.
- Active content
- Potassium nitrate, strontium or stannous, depending on the formula.
- Abrasivity
- Based on the abrasive supplier's data sheet; assessed for the notification.
- pH, viscosity
- Measured on a diluted slurry and on the paste.
- Microbiology
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
- Stability
- No separation, discoloration or hardening of the paste after aging.
- Packaging compatibility
- Monitoring of tubes and caps for swelling or delamination of the inner layer.
Claims
Keeping claims within cosmetic scope
Tooth sensitivity is something users feel clearly, so promises easily go beyond cosmetic scope. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the cosmetic product notification.
