Skin on the arms, legs and back is thicker than facial skin and tends to build up dead cells, especially on the elbows, knees and upper arms. A body exfoliator clears away excess dead skin cells so skin feels smoother and the care steps that follow absorb better. Products work in two ways: mechanically — abrasive particles rubbed over the skin — and chemically — mild acids that loosen the bonds between dead cells. Particle scrubs make up most of the Vietnamese market, with familiar stories such as coffee, sugar, rice bran and salt. Quality lies in the details: particles abrasive enough without sharp edges, no settling or oil separation in the jar, and skin that feels soft rather than dry and squeaky after rinsing. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to labeled finished goods and the cosmetic product notification.

Formula base

Exfoliating particles, carrier base and conditioning agents

Each formula has an exfoliating component (particles or acids), a base that keeps particles suspended, and a conditioning component that replenishes skin after exfoliation.

Natural exfoliating particles

Sugar, ground coffee, walnut shell, apricot kernel, rice bran, jojoba ester beads, cellulose — each with a different hardness and solubility. Plastic microbeads are restricted in many markets, so we do not use them.

Carrier base

Oil base (coconut oil, plant oils) for sugar and coffee scrubs; a rinse-off cream base with mild surfactants for easy-rinsing scrubs; a gel base with suspending polymers for clear formats.

Chemical exfoliation

Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid at suitable concentration and pH — for smoothing body lotions or body washes that need no scrubbing.

Conditioning agents and fragrance

Glycerin, shea butter and plant oils keep skin soft after rinsing; coffee, coconut, vanilla and citrus scents create a signature.

Key technical points

Four factors that determine body scrub quality

Abrasive enough without scratching

Particles are sieved to an agreed size; natural particles such as walnut shell are milled to round off edges. Every sample is rub-tested on skin before approval.

No particle settling or oil separation

The base is thickened or gelled just enough to keep particles suspended; oil-based scrubs need an oil-phase thickener so oil does not rise to the top.

Rinses easily, no greasy film

Oil-based scrubs include an emulsifier or mild surfactant so oil washes away with water and does not leave the shower floor slippery.

Acids at the right pH and concentration

The efficacy and gentleness of acids depend on the pH of the finished product; labels of acid-containing products need directions to use sunscreen.

Three formulation directions

Three common types of body exfoliator

Particle scrub

Sugar, coffee or salt in an oil or cream base; a noticeable scrubbing feel and a natural image. A strong seller on e-commerce channels.

Peeling gel

A clear gel rubbed on dry skin that forms small rolls. These are mostly the product's own polymer clumping together, mixed with some dead skin cells — this must be described accurately on the label and in advertising.

Acid body lotion or body wash

Low-concentration AHA and BHA for daily use; smooths rough areas without scrubbing.

Packaging must be planned with the formula

Wide-mouth jars with a spoon for particle scrubs; tubes and pump bottles for gels and lotions. Large particles can clog pumps.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Particle size and shape
Sieving and microscopy; checks for sharp-edged particles and the proportion of oversized particles.
Homogeneity
Particles evenly distributed, with no settling or oil separation after aging tests and centrifugation.
pH
Measured at 25°C; especially important for acid-containing products.
Viscosity
Determines particle suspension and how the product feels when scooped.
Microbiology and preservative challenge
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; plant powders such as coffee and rice bran are a microbial source that requires incoming inspection.
Evaluation on skin
Abrasiveness, feel when rinsing, skin softness after use, redness.
Heavy metals
Plant and mineral powders are sources that need control; checked against certificates of analysis and tested on the finished product.
Packaging compatibility
Monitors oil seepage through the jar and pump clogging for pump bottles.

Claims

Writing claims within the cosmetic scope

Body exfoliators are often promoted for darkened or bumpy skin — the benefit must be named in cosmetic terms. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the notification dossier.

Removes dead skin cells for smoother skin

Instead of: peels the skin, regenerates skin, resurfaces skin.

Helps rough areas feel softer and smoother

Instead of: treats folliculitis, treats keratosis pilaris, treats hyperkeratosis.

Skin looks brighter and smoother

Instead of: treats dark buttocks, treats dark underarms, whitening body bath.

Cleanses the skin on the back

Instead of: treats back acne.

Peeling gel

Describe the mechanism accurately; do not claim that all the rolls formed are dead skin.

Acid-containing products

Include directions to use sunscreen during the day and to avoid broken skin.

Suggested product concept

Coffee and coconut oil body scrub

A product concept to help you picture the result — not a ready-made product for sale. The actual formula is developed to match your brand positioning and price range.

Ground coffee and sugar

Coffee grounds provide abrasiveness and a signature scent; sugar dissolves gradually in water, so the scrubbing feel softens as you go.

Coconut oil base with emulsifier

Coconut oil conditions skin; the emulsifier helps the oil rinse away cleanly without leaving a greasy film.

Milk coffee scent

A warm coffee-and-vanilla scent tied to the story of Vietnamese coffee.

250 g jar with spoon

Wide-mouth jar with a spoon to scoop the product so no water gets into the jar.
