Body sunscreen is applied over an area of skin many times larger than the face, so consumers expect very specific things: it should spread quickly, not stick to clothing, leave no white cast, not feel hot on the skin, and be reasonably priced for generous use. This category is also chosen for demanding conditions — the beach, outdoor sports, working in the sun — where sweat and water test how well the protective layer holds up. SPF, PA and water resistance must all be measured on the finished product itself before they go on the label. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development and coordinating sun protection testing to a labeled finished product with its cosmetic product notification.

Formula base

UV filters, carrier base and film formers

Sun protection comes from the UV filters; skin feel and the durability of the protective layer come from the base and the film formers.

Organic filters

Filters from the permitted list, combined to cover both UVB and UVA; newer-generation filters offer good photostability and rarely need high concentrations.

Mineral filters

Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide — gentle on sensitive skin and for children; they need surface treatment and good dispersion to limit white cast over large areas.

Carrier base

A fast-absorbing fluid emulsion, a quick-drying alcohol-based gel, or a clear oil base for sprays; chosen according to the desired feel and sales channel.

Film formers

Film-forming polymers help the protective layer adhere evenly and hold up against sweat and water; they determine whether a water-resistance claim is possible.

Key technical points

Four things that determine body sunscreen quality

Values measured on the finished product

SPF, PA or UVA values are measured on the final formula by an independent testing facility; any change to the formula or the filter supplier requires re-evaluation.

Even spreading over large areas

The texture must spread evenly in a few strokes; an uneven layer is the main reason skin still burns even when the product is used.

Non-greasy, no white cast

Oil ratio, filter type and mattifying powders are balanced to dry quickly, not stick to clothing and leave no white cast on darker skin.

Water and sweat resistance

Film formers and a water-repellent base keep the protective layer in place during sweating or swimming; a water-resistance claim is made only after testing by a standard method.

Three formulation directions

Three common body sunscreen formats

Body sun lotion

A fluid, fast-absorbing emulsion for daily use; pigments can be added for a light tone-up effect.

Sport and beach sunscreen

A water-resistant base with film formers; dry feel that holds up to sweat. Water resistance must be tested if it is to be claimed on the label.

Mist spray sunscreen

An alcohol or light oil base in a hand-pump spray bottle; convenient for reapplication. Directions should say to spray into the hands and then spread evenly, not to spray directly on the face.

Packaging designed alongside the formula

Flip-cap bottles, large tubes, spray bottles. Filters and oils can soften or stain some plastics; compatibility must be tested first.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

SPF and PA
Measured on the finished product by an independent testing facility according to recognized test standards.
Water resistance (if claimed)
Values measured after water immersion by a standard method; only the number of minutes actually measured is stated.
UV filter content
Tracked against the formula and checked on the finished product to ensure it stays within permitted limits.
Emulsion stability
Centrifugation, freeze–thaw cycling, storage at 40°C and 45°C; monitoring for separation, filter crystallization and color change.
pH and viscosity
Measured at 25°C; viscosity determines spreadability over large areas and sprayability.
Microbiology and preservative challenge
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test according to ISO 11930.
On-skin evaluation
Dry-down time, tackiness, white cast, pilling, transfer onto clothing.
Packaging compatibility
Monitoring for plastic softening, staining and spray nozzle clogging.

Claims

Writing claims within the cosmetic scope

Sun protection values are verifiable numbers, so every number on the label must be backed by test results. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the cosmetic product notification.

Sun protection with SPF and PA as tested

Instead of: total sun protection, blocks 100% of UV rays.

Helps protect skin from sun damage

Instead of: prevents skin cancer, treats sunburn.

Water resistant for the number of minutes tested

Instead of: fully waterproof, never washes off.

Instantly makes skin look brighter

Accurately describes the tone-up effect of pigments; instead of: skin whitening.

Reapplication directions

Clearly state to apply a sufficient amount and reapply after swimming, towel drying or heavy sweating.

Marine-friendly

Claim only with specific supporting evidence; there is no common standard for phrases such as "reef safe".
