Charcoal toothpaste attracts users with its distinctive black color and the story of removing coffee and tea stains. Behind that look are three technical challenges the formula must solve: the abrasivity of the charcoal powder must not wear down enamel with daily use, the black color must rinse cleanly off teeth and the sink, and the activated charcoal must not reduce the available fluoride in the paste. Get those three right and the product has its own story while remaining suitable for long-term use, including by people with sensitive teeth. Formula base
Toothpaste base with ultra-fine activated charcoal
Activated charcoal makes up only a small share; the main cleaning work is done by low-abrasivity abrasives and a stain-binding chelating system.
Activated charcoal
Ultra-fine charcoal powder at a low level, with a certificate of analysis; combined with a permitted black colorant for an even color.
Stain removal
Low-abrasivity silica, polyphosphates, pyrophosphates — remove surface stains chemically rather than by raising abrasivity.
Fluoride or sensitive-teeth active
Sodium fluoride within permitted limits; potassium nitrate for a line that is gentle on sensitive teeth.
Flavor and feel
Mint, mint green tea; xylitol and non-cariogenic sweeteners.
Key technical points
Four factors that determine charcoal toothpaste quality
Controlled abrasivity
Charcoal particle size and abrasives are chosen so total abrasivity stays at a level suitable for daily use; evaluated on the finished product.
Fluoride stays available
Activated charcoal is adsorptive — available fluoride is assayed at manufacture and after aging.
Black color rinses clean
Ultra-fine, evenly dispersed particles and a quick-rinsing base so nothing clings between teeth, around dental restorations or in the sink.
Stable color
The paste does not separate, the charcoal does not settle, and the color does not turn gray over time.

Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Total and available fluoride
- At manufacture and after aging — the key parameter for charcoal lines.
- Abrasivity
- Evaluated on the finished product against the agreed target level.
- Charcoal particle size
- Per the supplier's certificate and rechecked whenever the lot changes.
- pH, viscosity
- Measured on a diluted slurry and on the paste.
- Color
- Uniform color, no settling, no separation after freeze–thaw cycling.
- Microbiology, heavy metals
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; heavy metals are also tested on the charcoal raw material.
- Packaging compatibility
- Monitors tubes, caps and color build-up at the tube orifice.
