Foam toothpaste is a newer format popular with young adults, braces wearers and families with older children: one press releases a fine foam that reaches between teeth and around brackets more easily than paste, rinses off quickly and leaves no residue. Unlike toothpaste, foam toothpaste is a thin liquid pushed through the mesh of a foamer pump, so the formula can hardly use particulate abrasives. Cleaning relies on a mild foaming system and chelating agents that lift surface stains, while fluoride, sweeteners and flavor are dissolved in the water base. The mechanical foamer bottle needs no aerosol can. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula to labeled finished goods and the cosmetic product notification dossier.

Formula base

A clear foaming liquid with no abrasive particles

Foam toothpaste is a very low-viscosity aqueous solution; every ingredient must dissolve completely so the foamer mesh does not clog.

Foaming system

Sarcosinate, betaine, glutamate — fine, stable foam that is gentle on the oral mucosa; SLS-free options available.

Stain removal

Soluble polyphosphates bind surface stains, replacing particulate abrasives.

Actives

Sodium fluoride within permitted limits; zinc chloride or CPC for fresh breath.

Flavor and humectants

Xylitol, sorbitol, glycerin; mint flavor, low-dose menthol.

Key technical points

Four factors that determine foam toothpaste quality

Foam matched to the pump

Low viscosity and a foaming system tuned to the specific foamer pump selected; fine foam that does not run.

No mesh clogging

No abrasive particles and no crystallization at the nozzle; tested with continuous pumping and after long standing.

Compatible actives

CPC does not go with anionic surfactants; the right foaming system is chosen from the start.

Robust preservation

A thin water base is prone to microbial contamination with repeated pumping; the preservative system is challenge-tested on the final formula.

Three formulation directions

Three common foam toothpaste lines

Mint with fluoride

Gentle surface stain removal, helps prevent cavities, fresh breath; an everyday line.

For braces wearers

Foam that reaches around brackets, SLS-free, with zinc for fresh breath.

Fruit flavors for older children

Mild strawberry or peach; suitable fluoride level and directions for parents.

Packaging designed with the formula

Mechanical foamer bottle with clear overcap; aerosol formats discussed separately.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Fluoride content
Total and available fluoride, at manufacture and after aging.
Foam quality
Foam fineness and stability in the actual foamer bottle.
Viscosity, clarity
Clear solution with no haze when chilled.
pH
Measured at batching and after aging.
Preservative performance
Preservative efficacy (challenge) test on the final formula.
Microbiology
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
Packaging compatibility
Continuous pumping, leakage and mesh clogging after aging.
