Dry shampoo OEM/ODM manufacturing
Dry Shampoo · Hair Powder · OEM/ODM
Dry shampoo is for the days when there is no time to wash: sprinkle or spray it onto the roots, let the powder absorb excess oil for a few minutes, then brush through, and hair looks less greasy, fuller and fresher. It is popular with young consumers, office workers, business travelers, new mothers and people who work out. For the black hair typical of Asian consumers, the hard part is white cast: the oil-absorbing powder has to be fine and translucent enough to disappear into the roots without turning hair gray. Dry shampoo does not replace regular shampoo; it stretches the time between two washes by a day. Butter-C offers turnkey OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to labeled finished goods and the notification dossier.
Formula base
Oil-absorbing powders, slip agents and fragrance
Powder dry shampoo contains almost no water; the properties of each powder determine how much oil it absorbs and how invisible it stays on hair.
Starches
Rice, tapioca, corn and modified starches absorb oil and are plant-derived, which suits a natural brand story.
Mineral powders and silica
Silica absorbs oil strongly at low levels; kaolin and magnesium carbonate give a dry feel. Heavy metals need to be controlled.
Volumizing and slip agents
Slightly textured powders add lift at the roots; slip agents help the powder spread evenly without clumping.
Fragrance and color
A light fragrance leaves hair smelling fresh; small amounts of iron oxides are used in versions for darker hair to reduce white cast.
Key technical points
Four factors that decide dry shampoo quality
No white cast
Particle size, the powder's refractive index and any added color are chosen so the powder blends into black roots; every sample is tested on a black hair tress.
Fast oil absorption
The ratio of starch to silica determines how much oil is absorbed and how long to wait before brushing.
Free-flowing, even dispensing
Powders pick up moisture and cake in the bottle in humid weather; powder moisture content and anti-caking agents are controlled.
Safe use
Fine powder can become airborne when sprinkled; directions call for applying away from the face, avoiding inhalation and, in particular, not using on young children.
Three formulation directions
Three common dry shampoo formats
Shaker bottle powder
A shaker-cap bottle or squeeze bottle that puffs out powder; no propellant, compact and easy to ship.
Tinted powder for dark hair
A touch of iron oxide brings the powder closer to black or brown hair color, keeping white cast to a minimum.
Aerosol spray
Powder dispersed in propellant for a quick, even spray; this requires a dedicated line, so please contact us separately if you need it.
Packaging designed with the formula
Shaker bottles and powder-puff squeeze bottles with tight, moisture-proof caps. Shaker holes must match the particle size so they neither clog nor dispense too much.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Powder moisture content
- Measured on finished goods; determines whether the powder cakes in the bottle.
- Oil absorption capacity
- Oil uptake measured by a standard method and compared with the approved sample.
- Fineness and particle size distribution
- Sieved or particle-size measured; no coarse particles that make hair feel gritty.
- White cast on black hair
- Applied to a standard black hair tress, brushed out per the directions and assessed visually.
- Microbiology
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; starches are a microbial source and are checked on receipt.
- Heavy metals
- Mineral powders are a source to control; checked against supplier certificates of analysis and tested on finished goods.
- Fragrance stability
- Scent assessed after accelerated aging and after repeated opening of the cap.
- Packaging compatibility
- Monitored for clogged shaker holes and moisture ingress through the cap.
Claims
Writing claims within cosmetic scope
Dry shampoo acts only on the hair surface and roots, and label claims should describe exactly that. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the notification dossier.
Absorbs excess oil at the roots for less greasy-looking hair
Instead of: cleanses like shampooing, completely replaces shampoo.
Helps hair look fuller, with added volume
Instead of: thickens hair, stimulates thicker hair growth.
Leaves hair lightly scented
State hours of fragrance longevity only when backed by an assessment.
No white cast on dark hair
Claim only after testing on black hair.
Plant starch ingredients
Name the ingredients and their role accurately. Instead of: 100% natural, when the formula contains synthetic ingredients.
Directions for use
Sprinkle away from the face and avoid inhaling the powder; not for young children; not a substitute for regular shampooing.
