Oral care
Herbal toothpaste OEM/ODM manufacturing
Herbal Toothpaste · Salt & Herbal Toothpaste · OEM/ODM
Herbal toothpaste draws on familiar ingredients from traditional oral care: clove, betel leaf, sea salt, bamboo charcoal, propolis and miswak — the "toothbrush tree" of the Middle East and South Asia. Buyers of this category look for a natural feel and a distinctive taste quite different from mainstream mint toothpaste. The challenge is that herbal extracts are often bitter, astringent and dark, and can cause the paste to discolor or settle over time; high salt levels affect viscosity and foaming. The product can be made with or without fluoride — each option comes with different claim wording and warnings. Butter-C provides full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from extract selection and flavor balancing to labeled finished goods with the cosmetic product notification.
Formula base
Paste base, herbs, salt and flavor
Herbal toothpaste uses the same base as conventional toothpaste; the herbs and salt provide its distinctive taste, color and story.
Paste base
Silica or calcium carbonate abrasive, sorbitol and glycerin humectants, thickeners — the same as conventional toothpaste.
Herbs
Clove oil, betel leaf extract, miswak, propolis, licorice, green tea — standardized grades are used to keep taste and color consistent.
Salt and charcoal
Refined sea salt for the characteristic salty taste; bamboo charcoal powder for a black color and a cleansing story.
Flavor
Mint, cinnamon and clove balance the bitterness and astringency of the extracts; non-cariogenic sweeteners.
Key technical points
Four factors that determine the quality of an herbal toothpaste
Balancing bitterness and astringency
Herbal extracts and salt taste unpleasant at high levels; ratios are adjusted to keep the signature character while remaining acceptable for daily use.
Color stability
Extracts tend to darken with time and heat; color is tracked through aging tests and an acceptable range is agreed.
Salt without breaking the paste structure
High salt levels reduce viscosity and foaming; an electrolyte-tolerant thickening system is selected.
Fluoride compatibility
With fluoride, the abrasive and extracts must not deactivate the available fluoride; fluoride is assayed in the finished product.
Three formulation directions
Three common types of herbal toothpaste
Salt and herbal toothpaste
Sea salt, clove, mint; a distinctive salty-spicy taste and long-lasting fresh breath.
Bamboo charcoal toothpaste
Black paste with bamboo charcoal and a mint flavor; a distinctive look that appeals to younger consumers.
Herbal tooth powder
A dry powder of abrasive, herbal powders and flavor; no preservative needed, packed in small containers.
Packaging is planned with the formula
Salt-resistant multilayer plastic tubes; tins or jars for tooth powder.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Fluoride content (if used)
- Total and available fluoride assayed in the finished product.
- pH
- Measured on a diluted slurry by the prescribed method.
- Color and taste
- Compared with the reference sample after aging tests; darkening and taste changes are tracked.
- Viscosity, extrudability
- Paste dispenses evenly from the tube, with no syneresis or running.
- Microbiology
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; herbal extracts and powders are a microbial source that requires incoming inspection.
- Heavy metals
- Salt, charcoal and herbal powders are sources to control; checked against certificates of analysis and tested in the finished product.
- Allergens in essential oils
- Eugenol in clove and cinnamal in cinnamon are fragrance allergens; labeled when above the threshold.
- Packaging compatibility
- Tubes are checked for corrosion and delamination caused by salt.
