Elbows, knees and ankles take constant friction and pressure, so their stratum corneum is thicker, drier and often darker than the surrounding skin. A regular body moisturizer is not enough to soften these areas; they need a dedicated product with stratum corneum softeners, rich humectants and a durable occlusive layer. It is a small category with clear demand, an easy way for a body care brand to stand out, and a natural companion to body lotion or body scrub. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to labeled finished goods and the cosmetic product notification dossier.

Formula base

Soften the stratum corneum, hydrate and seal in moisture

Thick skin needs three actions at once: soften excess stratum corneum, add water, and hold that water in with a durable film.

Stratum corneum softeners

Urea at higher levels than in a regular moisturizer, Lactic Acid and lactate salts, low-level Salicylic Acid — loosen the thick stratum corneum so skin feels softer and smoother.

Humectants

Glycerin, Sodium Lactate, Sodium PCA — components of the natural moisturizing factor that hold water in the stratum corneum.

Occlusives

Pure petrolatum, lanolin, shea butter, waxes — form a water-retaining film on skin that rubs frequently.

Tone-evening actives

Niacinamide, licorice extract, Tranexamic Acid — help darker areas look more even in tone with regular use.

Key technical points

Four factors that determine the quality of a thick-skin cream

Urea stability in the cream

Urea slowly breaks down into ammonia, raising pH and producing an odor over time. A lactate buffer, the right pH and adding Urea during the cool-down phase keep the cream stable.

Mild acid levels

Thick skin tolerates acids better than facial skin, but the skin around elbows and knees can still sting; concentration and pH are tuned for daily use.

A non-greasy occlusive layer

Rich occlusives can feel greasy and transfer to clothing. Polymers and mattifying powders keep the film durable yet dry to the touch.

Convenient formats

Small tubes, twist-up sticks or roll-ons apply to the exact area without messy hands; each format needs its own formula base.

Three formulation directions

Three product formats for thick skin

Softening Urea cream

Rich cream with Urea and Lactic Acid to soften the stratum corneum; suits very dry, rough skin and dry seasons.

Tone-evening cream for darker areas

Niacinamide, licorice and Tranexamic Acid combined with mild softeners; helps elbows and knees look more even in tone over time.

Stick balm

Anhydrous base of butters, waxes and oils; twist up and apply directly, pocket-sized. Cannot carry Urea levels as high as a cream.

Packaging designed with the formula

Aluminum or multilayer plastic tubes, twist-up sticks, small jars. Urea and acids need tight packaging that withstands the cream's pH.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

pH over time
Measured at manufacture and after aging tests; a rising pH signals Urea breakdown.
Odor
Monitored for ammonia odor after storage at 40°C.
Emulsion stability
Centrifugation, freeze–thaw cycling, storage at 40°C; monitored for separation and Urea crystallization.
Hardness (stick format)
Checks hardness, glide on application and sweating of the stick at high temperature.
Microbiology and preservative challenge
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative challenge test per ISO 11930.
On-skin evaluation
Stinging, greasiness and skin softness after a single and repeated use.
Restricted active content
Salicylic Acid and other restricted actives are tracked per formula and tested when needed.
Packaging compatibility
Monitored for aluminum tube corrosion, tube swelling and cap leakage.
