Diaper cream OEM/ODM manufacturing
Diaper Cream · Nappy Cream · Barrier Cream · OEM/ODM
The diaper area is where a baby's skin is in constant contact with moisture and friction, so parents usually apply a protective layer of cream after every diaper change. Within the cosmetic scope, the cream's role is to form a barrier between skin and moisture while keeping skin hydrated and soothed — not to address skin that is already damaged. Zinc oxide and film-forming oils and waxes are the backbone of the formula. This category also has specific preservative rules: certain parabens may not be used in leave-on products for the diaper area of children under 3. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula to a finished, labeled product with its cosmetic product notification.
Formula base
Zinc oxide cream with film-forming oils and waxes as a moisture barrier
Diaper creams are usually water-in-oil emulsions or anhydrous balms, so the film adheres well and is not washed away by urine.
Zinc oxide
A white mineral powder that forms a covering film, typically at high levels; non-nano grades are used.
Film formers
Petrolatum, purified lanolin, beeswax, dimethicone — block moisture and reduce friction.
Conditioning and soothing
Panthenol, allantoin, bisabolol, calendula, shea butter.
Emulsification and preservation
Mild water-in-oil emulsifiers; a preservative system free of propylparaben and butylparaben.
Key technical points
Four factors that define diaper cream quality
Easy to spread yet covering
High zinc levels make the cream thick and white; fine powder dispersion and suitable oils make it easy to spread on damp skin.
Easy to wipe off at changes
The film adheres well enough yet wipes off with a soft cloth, without hard rubbing.
Permitted preservatives
No propylparaben or butylparaben in leave-on products for the diaper area of children under 3; the preservative system is challenge-tested on the final formula.
Fragrance-free, color-free
A sensitive, covered skin area — potential allergens are kept to a minimum.
Three formulation directions
Three common diaper cream lines
Zinc cream for every change
Moderate zinc oxide, a soft cream that spreads easily; the daily-use line.
Concentrated zinc cream
Higher zinc oxide in a petrolatum and lanolin base; a thicker film for overnight.
Zinc-free cream
Panthenol, lanolin, dimethicone — a clear or lightly white cream that leaves no white cast.
Packaging is designed together with the formula
Tubes to limit contamination; jars only for anhydrous balms with a robust preservative system.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Zinc oxide content
- Assayed in the finished product against the formula.
- Emulsion stability
- Freeze–thaw cycling and centrifugation; no oil separation, no powder settling.
- Consistency and spreadability
- Consistency measured; spreadability assessed on skin.
- Microbiology
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, to the criteria for children's products.
- Preservative efficacy
- Preservative efficacy (challenge) test on the final formula.
- Heavy metals
- Tested in the zinc oxide raw material and the finished product.
- Packaging compatibility
- Monitored for tube, cap and leakage after aging.

Writing claims within the cosmetic scope
