Clove, mint and cinnamon are familiar flavors in traditional oral care, and many people want a compact essential oil product to use alongside their toothpaste. One thing needs to be clear from the start: this is an oral hygiene product — it keeps breath fresh and leaves the mouth feeling clean — and its benefits stay within cosmetic scope. Pure essential oils are highly concentrated and can irritate the oral mucosa, so the formula must dilute them in a carrier oil at a safety-assessed ratio, and the label must state the dose and the fragrance allergens clearly. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula to labeled finished goods and the cosmetic product notification dossier.

Formula base

Essential oils diluted in a carrier oil at an assessed ratio

The product is mostly carrier oil with a small proportion of essential oils. That proportion determines both the in-use feel and the level of safety for the oral mucosa.

Carrier oil

Coconut oil, sesame oil, medium-chain triglycerides — suitable for oral care products, low odor.

Essential oils

Clove, peppermint, cornmint, cinnamon, tea tree — at low doses, with quality certificates for oral care use.

Cooling agents

Low levels of menthol and eucalyptol to enhance the minty sensation.

Antioxidant

Tocopherol keeps the carrier and essential oils from turning rancid or changing odor.

Key technical points

Four factors that determine oral care essential oil quality

Essential oil ratio

Clove and cinnamon oils are rich in eugenol and cinnamal — high concentrations cause burning and irritation of the mucosa. The ratio is set by safety assessment, not by a "the spicier the better" feel.

Allergens on the label

Eugenol, limonene, linalool, cinnamal… from essential oils must be totaled and named when above the threshold.

Essential oil sourcing

Oils with a certificate of analysis, clearly defined main constituents and no adulteration; grades intended for oral care products are preferred.

Spill-resistant packaging

Amber glass bottles with metered droppers; child-resistant caps considered for concentrated formats.

Three formulation directions

Three common oral care essential oil formats

Drops for the toothbrush

Essential oils diluted in a carrier oil; 1–2 drops on the toothbrush together with toothpaste.

Oil pulling oil

Coconut or sesame oil base with low-dose mint oil; swish in the mouth, then spit out.

Concentrate for dilution in water

Essential oils with a solubilizer; a few drops in a glass of water for rinsing, with the dilution ratio clearly labeled.

Packaging designed with the formula

5–30 ml dropper bottles for drops; larger bottles with measuring caps for oil pulling oil.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Sensory profile
Color, odor, taste, clarity; compared with the reference sample.
Peroxide value
Monitors rancidity of the carrier oil over time.
Main essential oil constituents
Checked against the supplier's certificate of analysis; rechecked whenever the lot changes.
Fragrance allergens
Totaled across all essential oils to determine labeling.
Microbiology
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
Stability
Odor and color monitored after aging and under light.
Packaging compatibility
Droppers and rubber liners monitored against concentrated essential oils.
