A night cream differs from a day cream in how it is used: there is no sunlight, no makeup on top, and the product stays on the skin for hours. That makes it possible to use light-sensitive actives such as retinol, to choose a richer cream base without worrying about shine, and to prioritize locking in moisture overnight, when skin loses more water than during the day. In return, the formula has to keep sensitive actives stable in the jar throughout the shelf life and be gentle enough for nightly use. Butter-C offers turnkey OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to labeled finished goods and the notification dossier.

Formula base

Nighttime actives in a rich cream base

A night cream formula consists of a core active group, a lipid-replenishing group and an occlusive cream base. The three groups below are the directions Butter-C works with.

Vitamin A and alternatives

Retinol, retinal, hydroxypinacolone retinoate; bakuchiol is a plant-derived option that is more light-stable. Vitamin A ingredients have concentration limits and labeling requirements, which Butter-C checks against current regulations during formulation.

Peptides and surface renewal

Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Copper Tripeptide-1; low-concentration AHA/PHA help the stratum corneum renew more evenly.

Barrier lipids and occlusives

Ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids; squalane, shea butter, plant oils; dimethicone or waxes form a water-retaining layer overnight.

Points to weigh when choosing

Avoid combining too many strong actives in one jar; skin tolerance with nightly use; active stability in a jar opened many times; and cost.

Key technical points

Four factors that decide night cream quality

Keeping sensitive actives stable

Retinol is degraded by light, oxygen and heat. We use encapsulated forms, add antioxidants, add actives in the cool-down phase and minimize air during jar filling.

Rich but not occlusive-heavy

A higher oil ratio than a day cream; oils and esters that absorb well are chosen so skin feels soft the next morning without a greasy film or marks on the pillow.

Controlling irritation

Strong actives are paired with soothing agents (panthenol, bisabolol, allantoin, centella). pH is chosen to suit the key active; with AHAs, performance is balanced against gentleness.

Fragrance and a relaxing feel

Night creams usually carry a light scent. Fragrances are chosen with few declarable allergens and tested for compatibility with the actives, as some fragrances cause the cream to discolor.

Three formulation directions

Three ways to position a night cream

Moisturizing, barrier-restoring night cream

Ceramides, squalane, panthenol in a rich cream base. Aimed at dry and sensitive skin; suitable for nightly use, with no strong actives.

Anti-aging night cream

Retinol or bakuchiol combined with peptides. Aimed at customers aged 30 and up; directions should state the frequency for getting skin accustomed.

Sleeping mask

A gel-cream or thick gel texture that forms a thin moisturizing film, used in place of the night cream step a few times a week.

Packaging designed with the formula

Dark, light-blocking glass jars with an inner lid and spatula; for formulas containing retinol, consider aluminum tubes or airless pump jars.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Appearance & color
Color, odor and smoothness. Yellowing of vitamin A creams is tracked across stability time points.
pH
Measured at 25°C on a diluted solution; pH drift is tracked over time.
Viscosity
Measured with a rotational viscometer, at room temperature and after accelerated aging.
Emulsion stability
Centrifuge, freeze–thaw cycling and storage at 40°C; monitored for separation and oil bleeding.
Active content
Retinol or the key active assayed by HPLC at the start and after stability testing.
Oil phase oxidation
Rancid odor and peroxide value monitored when the formula uses a lot of plant oil.
Skin feel
Spreadability, absorption, tackiness and the residual film after application are assessed.
Microbiology & preservative efficacy
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test to ISO 11930.
Packaging compatibility
Filled into the actual jar to be used; checked for seal integrity, light protection and discoloration where the product contacts the lid.

Claims

Writing claims within cosmetic scope

The word "repair" on an English label needs careful wording when carried over into Vietnamese. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the notification dossier; below are commonly used phrasings.

Moisturizes and softens skin overnight

Instead of: treats dry skin, cures flaking.

Helps restore the skin's protective barrier

Instead of: regenerates skin, regenerates cells, heals skin.

Helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles

Instead of: erases wrinkles, rejuvenates skin, reverses aging.

Helps skin look firmer and fresher

Instead of: lifts facial muscles, tightens skin like a cosmetic procedure.

Label notes
