Bath salt comes in two forms that Vietnamese consumers call by the same name. The first is soaking salt: salt grains infused with essential oils and dried flowers, added to a bathtub or foot basin for relaxation. The second, more popular in the domestic market, is salt scrub: salt grains mixed with milk, herbs or nourishing oils, massaged onto damp skin and rinsed off for smoother skin after the shower. Both are dry or nearly dry, so the technical challenge lies not in an emulsion but in the salt grain: even grains, no caking in humid weather, a scent that does not fade, oil that does not separate, and grains soft enough not to scratch the skin. Butter-C offers turnkey OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to labeled finished goods and the notification dossier.

Formula base

Salt grains, nourishing ingredients and fragrance

The type of salt and grain size determine how the product feels in use; the nourishing ingredients and fragrance determine its positioning.

Base salt

Refined sea salt, pink salt and Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) for soaking salts; fine to medium sea salt for salt scrubs.

Foaming and water-softening agents

Sodium bicarbonate softens bath water for a silky feel; a small amount of mild surfactant helps salt scrubs rinse off easily with a light lather.

Nourishing ingredients

Milk, hydrolyzed milk protein, tamarind, turmeric, rice bran and plant oils build the product story and replenish moisture after the salt massage.

Fragrance and color

Essential oils, fragrances, dried flowers and colorants permitted for skin-contact products; fragrance level is set according to how well the salt holds scent.

Key technical points

Four factors that decide bath salt quality

No caking

Salt absorbs moisture very readily in humid weather. It is dried to the required moisture level, anti-caking agents are added when needed, and packing takes place in a dry room with moisture-barrier packaging.

Grain size and softness

Grains that are too large or sharp-edged can scratch skin; grains that are too fine dissolve on contact with water. Salt is sieved to the agreed grain size and checked for uniformity batch by batch.

Lasting scent

Fragrance is evenly loaded onto the grain surface using a type that holds up in salt; airtight packaging keeps the scent from fading after a few months on the shelf.

No oil separation

In paste-type salt scrubs, oil tends to rise to the top. The ratios of oil, oil-phase thickener and emulsifier are adjusted so the mixture stays uniform throughout the shelf life.

Three formulation directions

Three common bath salt formats

Relaxing soaking salt

Sea salt or Epsom salt infused with essential oils, with dried flowers; added to a bathtub or foot basin. Suits spas and gifting.

Dry salt scrub

Fine salt mixed with milk powder and herbal powders; users mix it with water or shower gel at the time of use. Affordable and easy to store.

Paste salt scrub

Salt pre-mixed in an oil base or rinse-off cream base; ready to use, with a noticeably nourishing feel and no dryness after rinsing.

Packaging designed with the formula

Screw-cap jars with a scoop, stand-up zipper pouches, glass jars. Packaging needs a good moisture barrier; salt can rust metal caps.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Moisture content
Measured on the base salt and on finished goods; the deciding parameter for caking.
Particle size distribution
Sieved through the agreed mesh sizes; fines and oversized grains are checked.
Appearance
Color, odor and uniformity of dried flowers and added ingredients, compared with the approved sample.
Oil separation (paste type)
Standing, centrifuge and 40°C tests; monitored for a floating oil layer and uniformity.
Microbiology
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, especially when milk and herbal powders are included.
Heavy metals
Mineral salts, pink salt and herbal powders are sources to control; checked against supplier certificates of analysis and tested on finished goods.
Fragrance stability
Scent assessed after accelerated aging and after repeated opening for use.
Packaging compatibility
Monitored for cap rust, oil seepage through packaging and moisture ingress through zippers.

Writing claims within cosmetic scope

Bath salts often come with promises that belong to the language of medical products (see the "Instead of" examples below). Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the notification dossier.

Suggested product concept

Milk and tamarind salt body scrub

A product concept to help you picture the possibilities, not a ready-made product for sale. The actual formula is developed around your brand's positioning and price range.

Medium-grain sea salt

Rounded grains, textured enough to remove dead skin cells without scratching; dissolves gradually when massaged on damp skin.

Milk and tamarind

Two ingredients familiar from traditional Vietnamese skin care, for a relatable story.

Light lather, easy rinse

A small amount of mild surfactant keeps salt from clinging to skin after rinsing.

300 g jar with scoop

Moisture-proof screw-cap jar with a scoop so no water gets into the jar when taking salt out.
