Rice bran oil (INCI: Oryza Sativa Bran Oil) is the fatty oil pressed from the bran layer of the rice grain, a milling by-product very familiar to Vietnamese consumers. Rice, rice bran and rice-rinsing water appear in traditional beauty practices across Asia; that is a cultural story for your brand, not evidence of efficacy. The well-supported roles of rice bran oil are as an emollient (its CosIng function) and an occlusive skin conditioner (CIR safety assessment); data on γ-oryzanol and tocotrienols come mostly from cell, animal or oral studies. So this rice bran body lotion is built as a leave-on oil-in-water emulsion for the whole body: rice bran oil is the named ingredient in a light oil phase, together with glycerin and humectants, so skin feels soft and moisturized while the lotion still absorbs quickly and does not stick to clothing in a hot, humid climate. The product is applied generously over a large skin area every day, so what the formulation lab watches most closely is skin feel, emulsion stability and protection of the oil phase from oxidation; claims stop at moisturizing and softening. Butter-C offers turnkey OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development and testing to labeled finished goods and the notification dossier.

Formula base

Rice bran oil in a light emulsion for the whole body

The formula has four parts: an oil phase featuring rice bran oil, the emulsifier and thickening system, humectants, and the preservative system. Unlike the rice bran oil facial cleanser (a rinse-off product), here the oil stays on the skin, so skin feel and the oxidative stability of the oil are the two main requirements.

Rice bran oil: choosing the right material

Oryza Sativa Bran Oil is the oil; it differs from Oryza Sativa Bran Extract (a bran extract), Oryza Sativa Starch (starch) and Oryzanol (γ-oryzanol listed as a separate ingredient). Most of the γ-oryzanol and tocopherol is lost when the oil is refined (Pestana-Bauer et al., 2012), so the certificate of analysis for each lot states the oil type (crude or refined), acid value and peroxide value.

A light oil phase for a large skin area

Rice bran oil is combined with light esters (caprylic/capric triglyceride, coco-caprylate/caprate) and a small amount of dimethicone to reduce stickiness and shine. Total oil phase is kept low for a fluid lotion and higher for a dry-skin version (formulation experience).

Emulsifier and thickening system

Glyceryl stearate with PEG-100 stearate and cetearyl alcohol for a stable emulsion; a PEG-free version uses polyglyceryl-3 methylglucose distearate. Carbomer or xanthan gum lightens the feel and keeps the viscosity right for a pump.

Humectants and a rice grain accent

Glycerin, sodium PCA and panthenol keep the stratum corneum hydrated. Rice starch (Oryza Sativa Starch; absorbent and viscosity-controlling functions in CosIng) can be added for a dry-touch feel; it is a different material and does not carry the data for rice bran oil.

Key technical points

Fast absorption, a stable emulsion and an oil phase that stays fresh

These four points decide whether a bottle of rice bran body lotion keeps the same odor, color and skin feel down to the last pump.

Skin feel over a large area

It is applied generously on arms, legs and back, so skin feel matters as much as function: dry-down time, tackiness, shine and transfer to clothing are assessed on skin in hot, humid conditions. The levels of rice bran oil, light esters and humectants are adjusted from these results (formulation experience).

Protecting the oil phase from oxidation

Linoleic acid makes up about one third of the fatty acids in rice bran oil (Rukmini and Raghuram, 1991, one edible-oil source). At 40 °C, edible rice bran oil was more oxidatively stable than rapeseed and soybean oils (Rahmania et al., 2020), but refined oil may have lost most of its γ-oryzanol. So tocopherol and EDTA are still added, the oil goes in at as low a temperature as the process allows, the packaging blocks light, and peroxide value and odor are monitored.

Emulsion stability in a large bottle

250–500 ml bottles are opened many times and kept in warm, humid bathrooms. Centrifugation, storage at 40°C and freeze–thaw cycling; carbomer is sensitive to electrolytes, so the sodium PCA and other salts in the formula are calculated together with the thickening system.

Preservation

A water-rich leave-on emulsion needs a preservative system that passes the ISO 11930 challenge test: for example phenoxyethanol (maximum 1%, ASEAN Annex VI) with ethylhexylglycerin. Rice starch, if used, is an agricultural material, so incoming microbiology is checked.

Three formulation directions

Three rice bran body lotion lines

Light, fast-absorbing body lotion

Low rice bran oil level, light esters, carbomer; dries down quickly and can be worn in the daytime in a hot, humid climate. A core line that sells across many channels.

Body lotion for dry skin and the dry season

More rice bran oil, fatty alcohol for a thicker texture and more glycerin; suited to shins and elbows in the cool season. A more noticeable conditioning feel, slower absorption.

Minimal, fragrance-free, PEG-free version

Polyglyceryl-3 methylglucose distearate as the emulsifier, no fragrance; for people who like a short ingredient list. The base still has the faint natural odor of rice bran oil.

Packaging is designed with the formula

Pump bottles, flip-cap bottles, tubes. Opaque packaging with little headspace helps limit oil oxidation; the viscosity has to suit the pump.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Appearance & odor
Color, odor, homogeneity; a rancid note is an early sign of oxidation. Compared with the reference sample kept in the R&D lab.
pH
Measured at 25°C; kept close to skin pH and within the working range of the preservative and thickening systems.
Viscosity
Measured with a rotational viscometer at 25°C, recording spindle and speed; determines pumpability and spreading feel.
Emulsion stability
Centrifugation, freeze–thaw cycling, storage at 40°C; monitored for separation, oil film, color change and odor change.
Incoming rice bran oil
Acid value and peroxide value for every lot; pesticide residues and heavy metals in line with the CIR note on rice-derived ingredients.
On-skin evaluation
Dry-down time, tackiness, shine, pilling on reapplication: the basis for "fast-absorbing, non-sticky" on the label.
Microbiology & challenge test
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test to ISO 11930.
Fragrance allergens (if fragranced)
ASEAN has no list of fragrance allergens that must be named (Annex III entries 67–92 are blank); for export to the EU, allergens are named when they exceed 0.001% in leave-on products (Annex III of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009). Because the application area is large, a light fragrance is preferred.
Packaging compatibility
Filled into the actual bottle; pump force, clogging, oil seepage and staining are checked.

Claims

Claims for a body lotion with rice bran oil

Evidence for rice bran oil applied to skin is limited: the only human topical study found used a nanoemulsion containing 10% oil, the improvement in hydration belongs to the whole formula, and the abstract does not state the sample size (Bernardi et al., 2011); another trial showing increased skin hydration used oral capsules (Jinnin et al., 2026) and does not apply to a topical product. Claims are therefore based on the emollient role of the oil and the formula's humectants, measured on the finished product where needed. Annex 03-MP of Vietnam's Circular 06/2011/TT-BYT does not accept claims of preventing or reversing aging.

Moisturizes, leaves skin soft and smooth

Instead of: repairs the skin barrier, deep hydration for many hours when not measured on the finished product.

With rice bran oil to soften skin

Instead of: whitening, brightening from γ-oryzanol, anti-aging.

Absorbs quickly, non-sticky (with user evaluation)

Instead of: absorbs in seconds when not measured.

Helps rough skin feel smoother

Instead of: effects on keratosis pilaris or ichthyosis; these are skin diseases that need a dermatologist.

Not a sunscreen

A blend of rice bran oil and rice germ oil has a UV absorption peak at 315 nm (CIR 2006), but the oil is not on ASEAN Annex VII. Instead of: natural sun protection, natural SPF.

Origin and warnings

State "Vietnamese rice bran oil" only when the supplier provides proof of origin. No case reports of contact allergy to rice bran oil were found, but no data does not mean no risk: people with sensitive skin should test on a small area; pregnant women and young children: data are insufficient, ask a doctor.
