A reed diffuser consists of a fragrance solution in a glass bottle and rattan or synthetic fiber reeds. The solution travels up the channels inside the reeds by capillary action and evaporates from the upper part of the reeds, carrying scent into the room with no flame or electricity. The main components are the fragrance (synthetic fragrance or natural essential oils) and a diffuser solvent such as dipropylene glycol methyl ether, isoparaffin or a plant-derived solvent; the solution contains no water. The diffusion rate depends on the volatility and viscosity of the solvent as well as the type and number of reeds. The process is mixing at room temperature, filtering and bottling — close to oil-based perfumes on a cosmetics line. Each solvent and fragrance has its own flash point — the temperature threshold above which the liquid's vapor can ignite in contact with a flame — so fire-safety conditions for manufacturing, storage and transport are discussed separately. Please note: this is a household product, not a cosmetic, and has no cosmetic product notification; the label follows the rules on product labeling, with warnings: do not swallow, avoid contact with skin and eyes, keep out of reach of children and pets, the liquid may damage painted, plastic and varnished wood surfaces. Butter-C advises on formulation and packaging; manufacturing requirements, in-house specification and product labeling are discussed separately for each project.

Formula base

Fragrance blended in a diffuser solvent

The diffuser liquid consists of fragrance, a carrier solvent and a small amount of stabilizer; it contains no water.

Fragrance

Synthetic fragrance or natural essential oils, at a much higher level than in a scented spray; with an IFRA certificate for the air care product type.

Glycol ether solvent

Dipropylene glycol methyl ether — dissolves fragrance well, evaporates moderately, low odor; a common base for rattan reeds.

Hydrocarbon solvent

Isoparaffin or plant-derived alkane — nearly odorless, low viscosity, draws the liquid up the reeds evenly.

Stabilizers and rate control

A small amount of antioxidant limits fragrance oxidation and discoloration; slow-evaporating solvents such as dipropylene glycol and triethyl citrate help adjust the diffusion rate in glycol ether bases.

Key technical points

Four things that decide the quality of a reed diffuser

Diffusion rate

Combine fast and slow solvents and choose rattan or fiber reeds and their number so the scent diffuses evenly from start to nearly empty, rather than strong at first and then fading fast.

Clarity and homogeneity

The fragrance must dissolve completely in the solvent; some solvent pairs do not mix, so a compatible system must be chosen; watch for haze and separation in the cold and after aging.

Flash point

Each solvent and fragrance has a different flash point; the measurement on the finished liquid is the basis for agreeing fire-safety conditions for manufacturing, storage and transport.

Packaging compatibility

The solvent can soften or crack some plastics and damage paint; use glass bottles, and stoppers and caps tested for compatibility.

Three formulation directions

Three common types of reed diffuser

Glycol ether base, even diffusion

Dipropylene glycol methyl ether combined with slow-evaporating solvents; a mainstream line for living rooms and bedrooms.

Plant-derived solvent base

Alkane from plant-based feedstock; fragrance can use natural essential oils, with an added antioxidant.

Strong scent for large spaces

High fragrance level in a low-odor, low-viscosity isoparaffin base with fiber reeds; for lobbies, hotels, shops.

Packaging must be planned with the formula

Glass bottle with a stopper, separately packed rattan or fiber reeds, gift box; cap materials tested with the solvent.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters monitored during formula development. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Appearance and clarity
Color, odor and clarity when freshly made, in the cold and after aging.
Density, viscosity
Per formula; directly affects how fast the reeds draw up the liquid.
Diffusion rate
Liquid loss tracked over time with a standard reed type and number, under room conditions.
Flash point
Measured on the finished liquid by a standard method, for storage and transport classification.
Fragrance stability
Odor of aged samples compared with the retained sample.
Packaging compatibility
Bottle, stopper, cap and label checked after aging: no leaks, no peeling labels, no fading print.
Fill level
Consistent across bottles in a batch.

Claims

Writing claims that fit the product category

A reed diffuser only talks about fragrance and the scent experience in a room; claims about air, insects or health belong to other categories.

Continuous room fragrance, no flame or electricity

Describes how the product works accurately.

Adjust scent intensity with the number of reeds

Describes the directions for use.

A pleasant scent for resting spaces

Instead of: claims about respiratory health, sleep or mood.

Fragrance for the room

Instead of: claims of cleaning the air or repelling insects.

State the fragrance composition correctly

Write "natural essential oils" only when the fragrance really is essential oil; synthetic fragrance is labeled as fragrance.

Directions and warnings

Do not swallow; avoid contact with skin and eyes; keep out of reach of children and pets; avoid spilling on painted, plastic or varnished wood surfaces; keep away from flames; declare fragrance allergens on the label as required by the target market.

Manufacturing specifications

Scope of cooperation
