Gleditsia shampoo OEM/ODM manufacturing
Gleditsia Shampoo · OEM/ODM
A pot of boiled gleditsia pods for washing hair is a familiar image in many Vietnamese families; that is a cultural story for your brand, not evidence of efficacy. Gleditsia pods (genus Gleditsia, legume family) contain triterpenoid saponins, compounds with surface activity. But the material used in manufacturing is an extract pre-dissolved in glycerin and water, with no declared saponin content, and we found no human study of shampoos containing gleditsia extract. So this gleditsia shampoo follows the principles of our herbal shampoo page: cleansing, lather and viscosity come from the surfactant system; gleditsia is the named ingredient that carries the story. Unlike the herbal shampoo page, which blends several herbs, this page focuses on what is specific to gleditsia: species and INCI naming, the brown color and sediment of the extract, microbial control, eye warnings and claim limits: no hair growth, no darkening of hair, no anti-dandruff claim. Butter-C offers turnkey OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development and testing to labeled finished goods and the notification dossier.
Formula base
Gleditsia extract in a complete cleansing system
The formula has the same four groups as any shampoo; the difference is that the named gleditsia extract changes the color, viscosity and microbial risk of the base, so it goes into the very first sample rather than being added at the end.
Gleditsia extract: right species, right INCI
The material Butter-C currently holds is a solution: "Glycerin (and) Water (and) Gleditsia fera extract". According to GBIF, Gleditsia fera, G. australis and G. sinensis are three separate species; the Vietnamese common name for gleditsia has not been tied to a single species in the sources checked, and the material is recorded as G. fera per the supplier's file. CosIng lists Gleditsia Fera Pod Extract (pods; functions cleansing, surfactant - cleansing, hair conditioning) but no "Gleditsia Fera Extract" or "Gleditsia Fera Fruit Extract". The label uses an INCI name that exists in the inventory and matches the species and plant part on the COA, plus the glycerin and water carried by the material.
Primary surfactant system
Sodium Laureth Sulfate with Cocamidopropyl Betaine for the mass-market version; amino acid surfactants (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate), glucosides and betaine for the sulfate-free version, on the same principle as our herbal shampoo page. This is what determines cleansing, lather and viscosity; mildness is a property of the whole blend, measured on the finished product.
Hair conditioners
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-10 and panthenol reduce tangling and ease combing after washing; glycerin includes the portion carried by the gleditsia material. Our internal raw-material technical record notes the extract may react with cationics (not checked against an independent source), so cationic polymers are tested for compatibility because of possible haze or precipitation.
Texture, chelation, preservation and fragrance
Sodium chloride or xanthan gum for viscosity; Disodium EDTA or Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate to limit metal-ion discoloration; the preservative system is challenge-tested per ISO 11930. Pomelo peel and holy basil scents evoke the hair-washing pot: in a rinse-off shampoo, IFRA sets no limit for grapefruit oil and CIR applies no bergapten limit (per our pomelo oil article); holy basil needs a methyleugenol COA (Annex II Ref 451: max 0.001% in rinse-off products).
Key technical points
Five things specific to a shampoo with gleditsia extract
These are the points where a gleditsia shampoo differs from a standard one; each is settled by raw-material documents or testing on samples.
Saponins cannot cleanse well enough on their own
A surfactant extracted from G. sinensis pods (a different species) self-assembled into micelles and removed 62.2% of tetradecane in an oil-contaminated soil experiment, a level the authors judged comparable with polysorbate 80 (Zhang N et al., 2023), not tested on hair or skin. A review considers saponins potential raw materials for shampoos (Bezerra et al., 2018), but there are no data for this material itself. The material also has no declared saponin content, so lather, cleansing and viscosity always come from the primary surfactant system.
Brown color, sediment and the salt curve
Plant extracts can shift the salt-thickening curve, cause sediment and darken over time. Our internal raw-material technical record (not checked against an independent source) notes the extract is sensitive to heat and light, so it is added in the cool-down phase; chelators and opaque or amber bottles help keep the color. The salt curve is redone whenever the extract level or the material batch changes.
Microbiology
An extract in glycerin and water is a favorable medium for microorganisms. Every extract batch needs a COA for microbiology and heavy metals; the finished product is challenge-tested per ISO 11930. A "preservative-free" claim does not suit this water-rich shampoo.
Eyes
There are no eye-irritation data specific to gleditsia extract. The cautious advice is inferred from a general mechanism: most saponins are surface-active and interact with cell membranes (de Groot and Müller-Goymann, 2016, a review that did not test gleditsia). The label warns to avoid eye contact; the finished product's safety file includes an eye-irritation risk assessment. The folk habit of washing hair with gleditsia water does not replace this assessment.
Short contact time
Shampoo stays on the scalp for a few minutes and is rinsed off, and most of the extract goes down the drain. Pharmacological studies on G. sinensis pods were all done in cells or in animals dosed orally, in a traditional-medicine context; they do not transfer to shampoo benefits.
Three formulation directions
Three ways to put gleditsia into a shampoo bottle
Mass-market gleditsia shampoo
Sodium Laureth Sulfate with Cocamidopropyl Betaine, gleditsia extract, guar polymer and pomelo peel scent. Rich lather, good price; cannot claim "sulfate-free"; the extract's color makes a clear shampoo hard to keep.
Sulfate-free gleditsia shampoo
Amino acid, betaine and glucoside system, natural light-brown color, higher positioning. Hard to thicken with salt; mildness for sensitive scalps is claimed only after testing the finished product.
Gleditsia, pomelo peel and holy basil shampoo
A trio evoking the traditional hair-washing pot. No study covers these combinations; this is a scent and ingredient story, and holy basil comes with a methyleugenol COA.
Packaging is designed with the formula
300 ml to 1 liter pump bottles, refill pouches. Opaque or amber bottles mask the extract's gradual darkening; pumps and gaskets are tested for compatibility with fragrance and extract.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
Below is the set of parameters Butter-C tracks during formula development and scale-up. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Appearance, color & sediment
- Color, odor, clarity or opacity, sediment; compared with a reference sample kept in the R&D lab, since plant extracts darken over time and vary by batch.
- pH
- Measured at 25°C; pH drift tracked across stability checkpoints because both the amino acid system and the preservatives depend on pH.
- Viscosity & salt curve
- Rotational viscometer at 25°C; the salt curve is redone whenever the extract level or material batch changes.
- Foaming
- Foam height and stability, also assessed with oil on the hair; compared with the approved sample.
- Conditioning performance
- Assessed on hair tresses: slip when rinsing, ease of wet and dry combing.
- Stability
- Freeze–thaw cycling, storage at 40°C and under light; watching for separation, sediment, color and odor change, viscosity drift.
- Incoming extract COA
- Full INCI including solvents, species, plant part, extraction solvent, microbiology, heavy metals; saponin content if the supplier declares it.
- Microbiology & preservative challenge
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test per ISO 11930.
- Fragrance allergens
- ASEAN has no list of fragrance allergens that must be named individually (Annex III, entries 67–92 left blank); for EU export, allergens are named above 0.01% in rinse-off products.
Claims
Claims for a shampoo with gleditsia extract
Evidence for gleditsia extract is limited: available data are chemical analyses, environmental experiments and cell tests, mostly on other species or plant parts; there is no human study of a shampoo or hair product containing gleditsia extract. Cleansing is a benefit of the whole product. Gleditsia is not an anti-dandruff active. Butter-C reviews label and marketing wording when preparing the notification dossier.
Cleanses hair and scalp ("gentle" only after testing the finished product)
Instead of: milder than sulfate shampoos, germ-free scalp, scalp detox.
With gleditsia extract; inspired by traditional gleditsia hair washing
Instead of: fully herbal, fully natural when the formula contains synthetic surfactants.
Helps hair feel smooth and easy to comb (with conditioning polymers and tress assessment)
Instead of: restores damaged hair, nourishes hair follicles.
Helps reduce breakage from combing (when breakage has been tested on the finished product)
Instead of: prevents hair loss, stimulates hair growth, thickens the hair strand.
Helps hair look glossy and healthy
Instead of: darkens hair, prevents gray hair, removes dandruff (an anti-dandruff claim needs an anti-dandruff active; see our anti-dandruff shampoo).
Warnings, origin and users
"Avoid contact with eyes; if contact occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of water"; stop if redness, itching or burning occurs. Write "Vietnamese gleditsia" only when the supplier has origin documents. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: not enough data, ask a doctor. Heavy flaking with redness and strong itching, or patchy hair loss, needs a dermatologist. Instead of: tear-free, safe for pregnancy and babies.
