Massage oil is a product that works together with the hands: it must have enough glide for a therapist or user to make long strokes without dragging, stay workable without drying out mid-session, and yet absorb gradually at the end, without leaving a greasy film on towels and sheets. Scent completes the experience — lemongrass, ginger, lavender, peppermint — and shapes the sense of relaxation clients remember about a spa or a brand. Because the formula is almost entirely oil, the technical challenge lies in blending carrier oils for the right glide, keeping the oil from going rancid and using essential oils at safe levels. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to a labeled finished product with its cosmetic product notification.

Formula base

Carrier oils, esters, essential oils and antioxidants

Massage oil contains almost no water; the ratio between oils determines glide, working time and the final level of greasiness.

Carrier oils

Sweet almond, grapeseed, sunflower, sesame, fractionated coconut oil — each with its own viscosity, absorption and stability.

Esters and dry oils

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Isopropyl Myristate, jojoba oil — reduce the greasy feel and extend working time without tackiness.

Essential oils

Lavender, lemongrass, ginger, peppermint, eucalyptus, orange — provide scent and sensation; used at safe levels according to supplier certificates.

Antioxidants

Tocopherol, rosemary extract — keep the oil from going rancid when bottles are opened and used daily at spas.

Key technical points

Four things that determine massage oil quality

Glide and working time

Oil that absorbs too fast must be reapplied constantly; oil that absorbs too slowly leaves greasiness. Heavy and light oils are blended to balance the two.

No rancidity, no towel staining

Oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids turn rancid easily and leave yellow stains on towels and sheets. We choose oxidation-stable oils, add antioxidants and check odor after aging.

Essential oils at safe levels

Essential oils containing allergens must be declared on the label above the threshold; some citrus oils cause photosensitivity. Use levels follow the supplier's safety certificate.

Easy to clean

Oils with an emulsifier turn milky on contact with water, rinsing cleanly from skin and washing out of towels — a choice many spas prefer.

Three formulation directions

Three common massage oil types

Relaxing massage oil

Light carrier oils with lavender, orange and woody essential oils; for spa and home use, with a scent most people find pleasant.

Warming massage oil

Ginger, lemongrass and cinnamon essential oils at safe levels; a pleasant warming sensation after massage, suited to cold climates and active users.

Rinse-off massage oil

Contains an emulsifier that turns milky with water; rinses cleanly from skin and leaves no greasy residue on towels — suited to spas and people who dislike an oily feel.

Packaging designed alongside the formula

Large pump bottles for spas, small bottles for home use. Glass or plastic resistant to essential oils; dark or opaque to limit light exposure.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Peroxide value and odor
Monitored after aging tests and after repeated bottle opening.
Viscosity
Measured at 25°C; determines glide and feel during massage.
Clarity and color
No haze, sediment or color change after storage at low and high temperatures.
Essential oil composition
Checked against the supplier's composition sheet and safety certificate; allergens requiring label declaration are calculated.
Emulsifying ability (rinse-off type)
Checking that the oil turns milky with water and how clean skin is after rinsing.
Microbiology
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
In-use evaluation
Trial use by therapists: glide, working time, final greasiness, staining on towels.
Packaging compatibility
Monitoring for plastic softening, pump leakage and scent loss.

Claims

Writing claims within the cosmetic scope

Massage oils are often marketed like liniments — but pain or ache relief claims fall outside the cosmetic scope. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the cosmetic product notification.
