Many men shave every day, and everyone wants to avoid the stinging and redness that can follow. A shaving product has three jobs: soften the beard so it cuts more easily, create a slick layer so the blade glides smoothly, and keep skin comfortable after shaving. Clear gels are popular because they show the shaving line, which suits beard trimming and styling; traditional shaving creams give a thick, cushioning lather when used with a brush. Aerosol foam formats require a dedicated gas-filling line and are discussed case by case. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formulation to labeled finished goods and the cosmetic product notification.

Formula base

A gel or cream base that gives the blade slip

Shaving gels use slip-enhancing polymers in a water base; shaving creams use soft fatty acid soaps for a rich lather.

Slip

High molecular weight PEG polymers, hydroxyethylcellulose, glycerin — for a smooth blade glide.

Beard softening

Water, glycerin and mild cleansing agents help hydrate the beard.

Soothing

Aloe vera, allantoin, bisabolol, panthenol.

Sensory

Low-dose menthol for a cooling feel; woody and citrus fragrances.

Key technical points

Four factors that determine shaving gel quality

Lasting slip

The gel layer must not dry out during the shave; evaluated through real shaving tests.

Clear, free of air bubbles

For clear gels, the polymer must be fully hydrated and deaerated so the shaving line stays visible.

Does not clog the razor

Rinses easily off the blade without leaving residue.

Gentle on skin

Moderate cooling, no drying alcohol; low fragrance for sensitive skin.

Three formulation directions

Three common types of shaving product

Clear non-foaming gel

Shows the shaving line clearly; suits beard trimming and styling.

Lightly foaming gel

A clear gel that forms a thin lather when worked with water; familiar to users who prefer foam.

Traditional shaving cream

Soft fatty acid soap with a rich lather when whipped with a brush; in a jar or tube.

Packaging must be planned with the formula

Tubes, pump bottles, cream jars. Aerosol foam formats are discussed separately.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

pH
Measured on fresh batches and after aging; shaving creams have a slightly alkaline pH.
Viscosity
Checked across temperatures so the product dispenses evenly from the tube.
Clarity
For clear gels: no air bubbles, no haze.
Slip during shaving
Evaluated through test shaves with a user panel.
Microbiology
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
Packaging compatibility
Tubes and pumps checked after aging.
