Turmeric brightening cream OEM/ODM manufacturing
Turmeric Brightening Cream · OEM/ODM
Turmeric is part of Vietnamese beauty habits, from fresh turmeric and turmeric powder applied at home to turmeric creams, so it is an ingredient story customers readily accept. That is culture, not evidence: no controlled trial has been found on the skin-brightening effect of turmeric root extract applied alone to healthy skin, and most clinical research on turmeric and skin is oral or in conditions that need medical care (Vaughn 2016). In a turmeric brightening cream, the claim "helps skin look brighter and more even" therefore rests on niacinamide at 2–5%, levels tested on people; turmeric extract is the named ingredient, carrying the story and a general antioxidant role. The technical challenge lies in turmeric itself: curcumin is a yellow pigment that can stain skin and fabric, it is unstable at neutral to alkaline pH and under light, and turmeric is a documented contact allergen. Butter-C offers turnkey OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development and testing to labeled finished goods and the notification dossier.
Formula base
Niacinamide carries the brightening claim, turmeric is the named ingredient
A turmeric brightening cream is an oil-in-water emulsion. The brightening claim rests on an active with human topical data; turmeric extract is selected and dosed for color, stability and tolerance. The four groups below are the components Butter-C works with.
Turmeric root extract
INCI Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract. The raw material Butter-C stocks is a liquid preparation in water, butylene glycol, glycerin and 1,2-hexanediol: the use level refers to the preparation, not the extract itself, and the INCI label must list every component of the preparation. No verified source gives a typical concentration range; the level follows the supplier's technical data sheet (TDS) and is set by color, stability and irritation testing.
Niacinamide
In Japanese women, creams with 5% niacinamide (18 people, paired design) and 2% niacinamide with sunscreen (120 people, each using two of three regimens) reduced hyperpigmented areas and increased skin lightness after 4 weeks versus the vehicle (Hakozaki 2002); a 5% cream for 12 weeks improved spots and sallowness versus the vehicle in 50 Caucasian women aged 40–60 (Bissett 2004). This is the basis of the claim "helps skin look brighter and more even".
Tranexamic acid (optional)
A cream with 2% tranexamic acid + 2% niacinamide improved the appearance of uneven pigmentation after 8 weeks versus the vehicle in 42 Korean women, with sunscreen use (Lee 2014). Maximum 3%, not for products in contact with mucous membranes (ASEAN Annex III, Ref A10).
Cream base
Glycerin and panthenol for moisture; MCT oil and squalane for softness; glyceryl stearate or olive-derived emulsifiers; tocopherol to protect the oil phase; disodium EDTA to chelate metal ions; a phenoxyethanol–ethylhexylglycerin preservative system.
Key technical points
Color, stability and allergy: what is specific to turmeric
Adding turmeric extract to a cream base adds a pH- and light-sensitive colorant and a known source of allergy. The four items below are tested on the very first sample.
Staining
Curcumin is a yellow-orange pigment used as a dye (Wolnicka-Glubisz 2023); turmeric is a textile dye with relatively poor color fastness, and mordants did not improve its fastness to washing (Yang 2026), so stains may partly wash out but not reliably. Stains are tested on skin, cotton towels, pillowcases, pack seams and caps; clear plastic is monitored for color absorption.
pH and light
Curcumin degrades faster at neutral to alkaline pH: in pH 7.2 buffer at 37 °C, about 90% degraded within 30 minutes (Wang 1997); curcumin also breaks down under light (Tønnesen 2002). The formula is therefore set at a mildly acidic pH (inferred from these data), confirmed by stability testing of both turmeric color and niacinamide content, and filled into light-protective packaging.
Extract versus curcumin, essential oil and powder
Curcumin is practically insoluble in water, so a water–glycol extract may contain less curcumin than an alcohol extract (inferred from solubility); any mention of curcumin requires a certificate of analysis that assays curcuminoids. Curcumin is also a colorant (C.I. 75300): if turmeric or curcumin is declared with a coloring function, ASEAN Annex IV (colorants) must be checked before notification. Pure curcumin and turmeric essential oil are different raw materials whose data are not interchangeable; homemade turmeric powder masks give no control over concentration, microbes or impurities.
Contact allergy and light
Turmeric and curcumin are documented contact allergens (a review of 11 studies, Chaudhari 2015); in patch testing of 18 people with suspected kumkum allergy, 4 were positive to turmeric (Annabathula 2018). In cell experiments, curcumin generated singlet oxygen and was toxic to keratinocytes under blue light (Wolnicka-Glubisz 2023, in vitro), so a leave-on cream is positioned for evening use, or for daytime with sunscreen.
Three formulation directions
Three turmeric brightening cream directions
Daily turmeric–niacinamide cream
A light lotion with niacinamide in the tested range and a low level of turmeric extract for a pale cream-yellow tint; a short formula at a reasonable cost.
Niacinamide with tranexamic acid
Follows the 2% + 2% pairing tested on people; aimed at skin with uneven tone, with a daytime sunscreen recommendation on the label.
Olive-based turmeric night cream
Olive-derived emulsifier and squalane in a richer texture for evening use, limiting light exposure of curcumin on the skin; a positioning for plant-focused brands.
Packaging designed with the formula
Light-protective tubes or pump bottles with little air contact; avoid clear plastic jars and light-colored caps that yellow easily. Color absorption is tested alongside the samples, not afterward.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
These are the parameters Butter-C monitors while developing the formula and scaling it up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Appearance & color
- Color, odor, smoothness; color compared with the reference sample, since fading yellow or browning indicates changes in the turmeric extract.
- pH
- Measured directly at 25°C; pH drift is tracked across stability time points because curcumin stability depends on pH.
- Viscosity
- Measured with a rotational viscometer, recording spindle and speed; linked to tube or pump packaging.
- Niacinamide content
- Assayed by HPLC; it underpins the brightening claim, so it is checked per batch and across stability time points.
- Staining
- The actual use amount is applied, pressed onto white cotton and washed; seams, caps and tube bodies are checked for discoloration.
- Stability
- Accelerated aging at 40 °C, freeze–thaw cycling, centrifugation and light exposure in the final pack; monitored for color change, separation, odor and pH.
- Packaging compatibility
- Filled into the actual tube, bottle and cap; monitored for color absorption, deformation and light penetration.
- Microbiology & challenge test
- Each lot of water-based extract is checked for microbes at receipt; the finished product is tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory with a preservative efficacy (challenge) test to ISO 11930.
- Irritation & tolerance
- Patch and in-use testing on volunteers before the formula is signed off, as turmeric carries a known contact allergy risk.
Claims
"Brightening" rests on niacinamide, not on turmeric
The product name includes "brightening", so the label and advertising must show that this benefit comes from niacinamide at a tested level; turmeric extract only gets general wording. Butter-C reviews the wording on the label and marketing materials as soon as the notification dossier is prepared.
Helps skin look brighter and more even (thanks to niacinamide)
Instead of: erasing melasma, whitening the skin, "turmeric whitens skin".
Contains turmeric extract, an antioxidant ingredient
Instead of: promises about acne, scars, wounds or conditions that need medical care.
Moisturizes, leaves skin soft and smooth
Instead of: skin regeneration, repairing damaged skin.
Turmeric in Vietnamese beauty habits (a traditional story)
Instead of: citing results of oral turmeric or medical trials to promote a topical cream.
Label notes
May leave a yellow color on fabric and skin; test on a small area of skin first; people who have reacted to turmeric, kumkum or turmeric-colored products should not use it; use with sunscreen in the daytime. Practical suggestions, agreed with you.
Pregnancy
Data on topical turmeric extract are insufficient; the product is not marketed to this group, and advice is to ask a doctor.
