"Melasma cream" is what the market commonly calls it; on the label and in the notification dossier, the product is named within the cosmetic scope: a brightening cream that fades the look of dark spots and evens out skin tone. It is also a category regulators inspect closely, because the market has seen adulterated creams containing banned substances. A brand that wants to last needs a formula built on permitted actives, within concentration limits, backed by certificates of analysis — and needs to accept that skin tone evens out over weeks, not days. Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to labeled finished product with its notification dossier.

Formula base

Acting on several stages of pigmentation

Dark spots form in several steps: trigger signals, melanin synthesis, and melanin transfer to the surface. Formulas usually combine two or three actives working at different stages rather than pushing up the concentration of one.

Actives acting on melanin synthesis

Alpha Arbutin, Kojic Acid, vitamin C derivatives, licorice extract (Glabridin), Hexylresorcinol. Some have concentration limits under the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive annexes; Butter-C checks the current version when developing the formula.

Actives acting on signaling and transfer

Tranexamic Acid and Niacinamide — two stable, easy-to-combine actives suited to daily use. They usually form the backbone of the formula.

Skin surface support

Low-concentration AHAs/PHAs or vitamin A derivatives help the stratum corneum renew more evenly; paired with soothing ingredients (Panthenol, Bisabolol, centella asiatica) to avoid irritation — prolonged irritation makes skin look duller.

What to weigh when choosing

Total active load versus skin tolerance; color stability of the cream; compatibility with a daytime sunscreen; and cost.

Key technical points

Four things a brightening cream must get right

Banned-substance control

Hydroquinone, corticosteroids, mercury and their compounds may not be used in cosmetics. Butter-C does not accept formulas containing them and tests the finished product so that evidence is delivered with each batch.

Stable cream color

Arbutin, Kojic Acid, vitamin C and plant extracts readily turn yellow or brown through oxidation and metal ions. The formula needs a chelating agent, antioxidants, a suitable pH and light-tight packaging.

pH and active compatibility

Each active has its own stable pH range; Arbutin hydrolyzes at too low a pH, and Niacinamide is less stable at strongly acidic pH. The shared pH range is set first, and the accompanying actives are chosen afterwards.

Cream base and skin feel

A hot, humid climate calls for a light, fast-absorbing, non-greasy cream base. The emulsifier system and base oils decide whether users apply it consistently every day — the deciding factor for results in this category.

Three formulation directions

Three ways to position a jar of cream

Daily brightening cream

Tranexamic Acid and Niacinamide in a light cream base, for morning and evening use. A direction for first-time users and sensitive skin.

Rich night cream

Adds actives that support stratum corneum renewal, in a more nourishing base; for evening use, with sunscreen required during the day.

Targeted dark spot cream

Small volume, active concentration at the high end of the permitted limits, applied locally to darkened areas.

Packaging is planned with the formula

Frosted or opaque jars with an inner liner and spatula; oxidation-sensitive formulas should move to tubes or airless pump jars.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors while developing the formula and scaling it up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Sensory profile & color
Color, odor, smoothness. Color drift of the cream is tracked across stability checkpoints.
pH
Measured at 25°C on a diluted solution; pH drift is tracked over time.
Viscosity
Measured with a rotational viscometer; tracked at room temperature and after accelerated aging.
Emulsion stability
Centrifugation, freeze–thaw cycling; emulsion droplet size is observed under a microscope.
Active content
Key actives are quantified by HPLC at the start and after stability testing.
Banned substances
Finished product is tested for hydroquinone, corticosteroids and mercury at an independent testing laboratory.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic and mercury within the regulatory limits for cosmetics.
Microbiology & preservative efficacy
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test per ISO 11930.
Packaging compatibility
Filled into the actual jar or tube to be used; seal integrity and discoloration where the cream touches the cap are checked.

Claims

Writing claims within the cosmetic scope

Product names and claims in this category are where notification dossiers most often get sent back for revision. Butter-C reviews the wording on the label and marketing materials as soon as the dossier is prepared; below are commonly used phrasings.

Product name

Brightening cream, dark spot fading cream, tone-evening cream. Instead of: melasma treatment cream, intensive melasma cream, melasma removal cream.

Helps fade the look of dark spots and dull patches

Instead of: treats melasma, removes melasma, eliminates melasma at the root, prevents recurrence.

Helps skin look brighter and more even-toned

Instead of: rapid whitening, bleaching, whiter by several shades.

Time to visible results

Numbers of days or weeks, or percentages, are stated only when supported by human test results.

Usage advice

Daytime sunscreen is recommended. Persistent or spreading darkening of the skin should be examined by a dermatologist — cosmetics are not a substitute for that.

Ingredient names on the label

Correct INCI names in descending order of content; "corticosteroid-free" is not stated as a benefit, since it is a mandatory requirement.
