A hair mask is an intensive care step used once or twice a week, or a familiar salon service: applied to hair after shampooing, left under a steamer cap or warm towel for a few minutes, then rinsed out. Compared with an everyday conditioner, a hair mask is richer in conditioning agents and oils, to soften hair that has become dry and coarse from perming, straightening, coloring, bleaching or sun and heat. Salons are a major channel with large-jar formats, and also where stylists judge products very critically: does the mask spread easily through thick hair, does it rinse clean, is the hair truly soft after blow-drying or only slippery when wet? Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development to labeled finished goods with a cosmetic product notification dossier.

Formula base

Cationic conditioners, oils, proteins and smoothing agents

A hair mask shares its base with conditioner but is richer in conditioning agents, oils and proteins for a noticeable effect on dry, coarse hair.

Cationic conditioners and fatty alcohols

Behentrimonium Chloride and Behentrimonium Methosulfate with fatty alcohols create a thick cream that detangles and softens hair.

Plant oils and butters

Argan, camellia, olive and coconut oils, shea butter — bring softness and shine to dry hair.

Proteins and conditioning agents

Keratin, collagen, hydrolyzed silk protein, Panthenol, ceramides — form a soft film that helps hair feel stronger when combed.

Smoothing agents

Amodimethicone targets damaged areas of the hair; silicone-free lines use esters and light plant oils.

Key technical points

Four factors that define hair mask quality

Rich yet rinses clean

A high oil content can leave hair feeling heavy after drying; the mask is tested on thick and long hair to balance softness against a clean finish.

Truly soft after drying

Hair is assessed both wet and after blow-drying; slip when wet does not fully reflect performance.

Stable in large jars

500–1000 ml salon jars are opened many times; the cream must stay stable without oil separation, and the preservative system must hold up to contamination from hands and tools.

Heat-tolerant under the steamer

The mask must not thin out or drip under a hot steamer cap; the fragrance must not change with heat.

Three formulation directions

Three common hair mask lines

Salon hair treatment

Large jars, a thick cream easy to apply with a brush, used with a steamer cap; per-liter pricing suited to salon services.

Retail hair mask

Tubes or small jars for home use once or twice a week, no steamer cap needed.

Hair mask for permed and colored hair

Protein-rich, with smoothing agents that target damaged areas and a slightly acidic pH that helps retain hair color.

Packaging must be planned with the formula

Large wide-mouth jars for salons, tubes and small jars for retail, single-use sachets for hotels.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters Butter-C tracks during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

pH and viscosity
Measured at 25°C; the cream must be thick enough not to run under a steamer cap.
Cream stability
Centrifugation, freeze–thaw cycling, storage at 40°C and 45°C; monitoring oil separation and changes in consistency.
Detangling performance
Combing force measured on bleached or colored hair swatches, wet and dry.
Post-drying assessment
Softness, shine and heaviness of hair swatches after blow-drying.
Microbiology and challenge test
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test per ISO 11930, especially for large jars.
Fragrance stability under heat
Odor assessed after a heated treatment.
Content of restricted substances
Cationic conditioners have concentration limits; tracked per formula.
Packaging compatibility
Monitoring lid seal on large jars and oil migration through packaging.

Claims

Keeping claims within cosmetic scope

Hair masks act on the surface of the hair shaft. So-called "keratin treatment" services that use formaldehyde-releasing agents are prohibited, and Butter-C does not take on that work. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the cosmetic product notification.

Thick cream, easy to apply with a brush

Coats thick hair evenly and does not run under the steamer cap.

Rinses clean, light hair

Hair is soft after drying without weighing down the roots.

1000 ml and 250 ml jars
