Tea is part of everyday Vietnamese life, from the pot offered to guests to the tea hills of the midlands — a familiar story for a body wash line. The named ingredient is tea leaf extract (INCI: Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract), a natural mixture containing catechins, especially EGCG. Human skin data for green tea extract come from leave-on use: less redness when applied before exposure to simulated sunlight, and a statistically significant change in sebum with a 3% emulsion applied to the cheeks for 8 weeks in 10 men — limited evidence. A body wash stays on the skin only briefly before it is rinsed off, and most of the extract goes down the drain; so a green tea body wash promises cleansing, fine lather, a tea scent and the skin feel after showering — measured on the finished product — not the effects of catechins. The technical work lies in a mild cleansing system to body wash standards, in holding the color as polyphenols tend to brown, and, if the brand wants a leaf-green shade, in using colorants permitted under ASEAN Annex IV. Butter-C offers turnkey OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development and testing to labeled finished goods and the notification dossier.

Formula base

Cleansing system, tea leaf extract, color and scent

A green tea body wash uses the same cleansing system as a standard body wash; what is specific is the tea leaf extract, how the color is held and how the tea scent is created.

Tea leaf extract: read the preparation correctly

The material in Butter-C's current ingredient list is labeled INCI Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract and, per its technical note, is a liquid in a water–glycol base: the use level is that of the preparation, not of the pure extract, and the label lists the carrier solvents and preservatives per the TDS/certificate of analysis. The certificate should state the plant part (leaf), solvent, polyphenol or catechin content with the test method, and microbiology.

Cleansing system

Sodium laureth sulfate with cocamidopropyl betaine for a high-lather, cost-effective gel; amino acid or glucoside systems for a sulfate-free line (mildness tested on the finished product; amino acid systems are sensitive to low pH).

Moisture and after-rinse feel

Glycerin, PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate and cationic polymers (Polyquaternium-7, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride) for a soft feel. The ingredient's technical note warns that cationics can react with tannin-rich extracts — clarity and haze are tested on samples before sign-off.

Color and scent

The extract's own color is yellow-brown, not leaf green; the green seen on shelves comes from added colorants — only colorants listed in ASEAN Annex IV, within their permitted scope, are used. The characteristic green tea scent of the finished product usually comes from fragrance (Parfum) (formulation experience).

Key technical points

Contact time, browning and clarity

These four points are where a green tea body wash differs from a standard body wash; each is settled by testing on samples.

Short contact time

In safety assessment, the portion of a shower product left on the skin after rinsing is calculated with a retention factor of 0.01 (SCCS, 2023). Human studies of green tea extract all used leave-on products; no study has shown a skin benefit of the extract in a body wash. The extract level is therefore chosen for story, color and cost, not for expected effects.

Polyphenols tend to brown

EGCG is unstable; it is more stable at higher concentration, lower temperature and lower pH (Frasheri et al., 2020 — EGCG data, not the whole extract). In practice: add the extract in the cool-down phase, include disodium EDTA to bind metal ions (iron ions darken the extract), use light-protective packaging and track color through stability testing.

A slightly acidic pH helps twice

A pH of about 5–5.5 sits within the mild range for body wash, is low enough for sodium benzoate to work (it needs pH below 5.5) and favors catechin stability (per EGCG data). With amino acid systems, pH is set by the clarity and viscosity of the surfactant system itself, which may call for a different preservative system.

Clarity and green color

The extract can haze a clear gel — filter, lower the level or add a solubilizer, settled on samples. Water-soluble colorants can fade when a clear bottle is exposed to light: fade testing is done in the actual bottle before sign-off (formulation experience). A pearlescent, opaque body wash masks slight color drift of the extract.

Three formulation directions

Three green tea body wash lines

Clear green tea shower gel

Sulfate–betaine system thickened with salt, a pale green shade from permitted colorants; a clean, fresh feel suited to hot, humid weather and active users.

Sulfate-free green tea body wash

Amino acid–glucoside–betaine system, light fragrance, no added color; positioned as gentle for dry skin and family use — mildness tested on the finished product.

Moisturizing pearlescent green tea body wash

An opaque base with glycol distearate, glycerin and emollients; the opaque base masks the extract's color drift, so no colorant is needed.

Packaging is designed with the formula

Pump bottles of 500 ml–1 liter and refill pouches; opaque or light-protective bottles for versions prone to color change, fade testing for clear bottles. Viscosity must suit the pump.

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

These are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

Certificate of analysis for incoming extract
Plant part, solvent, polyphenol or catechin content by the supplier's method, microbiology — for each lot.
Appearance and color
Compared with the reference sample; browning and haze tracked at 40°C, room temperature and under light.
pH
Measured at 25°C; kept within the agreed range for the preservative system and color stability.
Viscosity
Rotational viscometer at 25°C; extract and fragrance shift the viscosity curve, so thickness is adjusted last.
Foaming
Foam height and stability, compared with the approved sample.
Stability
Freeze–thaw cycling and storage at 40°C; tracking separation, color change, odor change and viscosity drift.
Microbiology and preservative efficacy
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy test to ISO 11930.
Fragrance allergens
Checked against the fragrance supplier's composition sheet. ASEAN and Vietnam set no separate labeling threshold; for EU export, fragrance allergens are named on the label above 0.01% in rinse-off products under EU rules.
Packaging compatibility
Filled into the actual bottle or pouch; pump force, leakage and fading of the product in clear bottles are checked.

Claims

Claims for a body wash with green tea extract

A body wash is a rinse-off product: its benefits are cleansing and skin feel. Green tea extract shows antioxidant activity in laboratory tests and reduced UV redness when applied as a leave-on product before exposure, but it does not filter UV (SPF of 1) and there are no data for body wash use. The CIR concluded that tea leaf ingredients are safe when formulated to be non-sensitizing (Becker et al., 2019). Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials while preparing the notification dossier.

Gently cleanses with a fine lather

Instead of: claims of effects on bacteria, germ-free whole body.

Fresh green tea scent

Instead of: body deodorant, stops sweat odor.

Contains green tea leaf extract

Instead of: antioxidant protection for skin after showering, anti-aging, protects skin from UV.

Skin feels soft, not tight, after showering (with sensory testing)

Instead of: restores skin, regenerates skin.

Cleanses excess oil on the back and chest

Instead of: effects on back acne, reduces sebum thanks to green tea.

Color and story

If the green comes from colorants, list the CI numbers in the ingredient list; tell the tea-hill and Vietnamese tea story as culture; name a growing region only with documents. Instead of: “natural green from tea leaves” when the color comes from colorants.
