Dry skin is common in older people: in 17 randomly selected nursing homes in Berlin, dermatologists found dry skin in 95.9% of care-dependent residents aged 65 and over (Völzer et al., 2023). According to a review by Wang et al. (2020), the stratum corneum of aged skin holds less water, its total lipid content is more than 30% lower than in young adults, and skin surface pH rises from about age 55. A body wash for this group therefore needs to cleanse gently enough. A systematic review by Lichterfeld-Kottner et al. (2020), covering 63 papers on people aged 50 and over, found that syndet cleansers or amphoteric surfactants helped dry skin more than soap and water, although the studies varied widely in design and measurement. Butter-C provides full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing of fragrance-free gentle body wash for older adults, from formula development and testing to labeled finished goods with the cosmetic product notification, with claims kept within the cosmetic scope: gentle cleansing, helps skin feel less dry and rough.

Formula base

Syndet cleansing system, emollients and humectants

A syndet is a synthetic cleanser that is not soap (soap is an alkaline salt of fatty acids). A gentle body wash for older adults' dry skin consists of four groups of ingredients.

Mild primary surfactants

Amino acid surfactants (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate) and glucosides (Coco-Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside), chosen to perform well at the mildly acidic pH of the base.

Amphoteric surfactants

Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate — refine the lather and reduce the impact of the primary surfactant on skin.

Emollients and humectants

Glycerin, Panthenol, sunflower seed oil, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate and cationic polymers (Polyquaternium-10, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride) — replenish part of the lipids washed away and leave skin soft after rinsing.

Fragrance-free, pH-matched preservation

No fragrance. The preservative system is chosen for the agreed pH (Sodium Benzoate with Potassium Sorbate at acidic pH, or Phenoxyethanol) and challenge-tested on the final formula.

Key technical points

Four factors that determine the quality of a gentle body wash for older adults

Clean without dryness or tightness

Just enough total surfactant, using syndet and amphoteric systems instead of soap, in line with the review by Lichterfeld-Kottner et al. (2020); emollients and humectants built into the formula.

Mildly acidic pH, measured on the finished product

The pH range is agreed with you and measured on every batch. The label may state the measured value, but not “balances skin pH”.

Viscosity suited to the pump

Amino acid and glucoside systems are hard to thicken with salt and need polymer thickeners. Viscosity is set so the pump is light to press and the product does not run off the palm.

Quick rinse, mind slippery floors

Moderate lather that rinses off quickly to keep showers short. Body wash left on the floor or in the tub makes it slippery; the label should remind users to rinse the floor after showering (practice suggestion).

Three formulation directions

Three types of gentle body wash for older adults

Clear, fragrance-free syndet gel

Glutamate, glucoside and betaine system; clear base that rinses easily; suits hot, humid climates and people who still shower on their own every day.

Creamy body wash with oils

Adds plant oils, shea butter and lipid-replenishing agents; a noticeably softer feel after rinsing; suits dry seasons and very dry areas such as the lower legs.

2-in-1 shampoo and body wash for assisted bathing

One product for hair and body so caregivers can work faster; eye sting and the feel on hair need additional evaluation.

Packaging is planned with the formula

Easy-to-open pump or flip-top bottles, a bottle shape that is easy to grip with wet hands, large high-contrast label text; large bottles or canisters for care facilities (practice suggestion).

Parameters we monitor

What our R&D lab measures on every sample

Below are the parameters Butter-C monitors during formula development and scale-up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.

pH
Measured directly at 25°C on the finished product; kept within the agreed mildly acidic range and within the effective range of the preservative system.
Viscosity
Measured with a rotational viscometer at 25°C; also checked after aging tests and matched to the force of the chosen pump.
Foaming and rinsing
Foam height and stability and the rinse feel, compared with the approved sample.
Surfactant content
Tracked against the formula and tested in the finished product to keep cleansing consistent between batches.
Stability
Freeze–thaw cycling and storage at 40°C; separation (especially in the creamy version with oils), color change, base odor change and viscosity drift are tracked.
Microbiology and preservative challenge
Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory; preservative efficacy (challenge) test per ISO 11930.
Support for the word “gentle”
To state “gentle” or “for sensitive skin” on the label, results from an evaluation on human volunteers are needed as support.
Packaging compatibility
Filled into the exact bottles and pumps to be used; pump force, leakage and flip-top closure are checked.

Claims

Writing claims within the cosmetic scope

Body wash is a rinse-off product: its main functions are cleansing and creating a skin feel. Annex 03-MP of Vietnam's Circular 06/2011/TT-BYT does not accept claims of preventing, reducing or reversing age-related changes for skin care products. Butter-C reviews the wording on labels and marketing materials as soon as the notification dossier is prepared.

Gently cleanses

Instead of: claims of an effect on itching or on skin disease.

Helps skin feel less dry and rough, not tight after showering

Instead of: restores the skin barrier, regenerates skin.

For older adults' dry skin

Instead of: prevents or reverses skin aging.

pH stated as a measured value

Instead of: balances skin pH, restores skin acidity.

Fragrance-free

Stated when the formula contains no fragrance; base ingredients may still have a faint odor of their own.

Directions for use

Shower with warm, not hot, water and keep it short; pat dry gently with a soft towel and apply moisturizer right after showering (practice suggestion, following our article on older people's skin).

Warnings

For external use only; avoid contact with eyes; stop use if skin becomes irritated. Itching that persists despite gentle washing and regular moisturizing should be checked by a dermatologist.
