After-bath body oil OEM/ODM manufacturing
After-Bath Body Oil · Dry Skin · OEM/ODM
After-bath oil is applied to skin that has been towel-dried or is still slightly damp, leaving a thin lipid layer that keeps skin soft and limits water evaporation. It is not a bath oil: oil dripping onto the floor or tub makes surfaces slippery, so for older users the directions, packaging and label warnings matter as much as the formula. Because the product is almost entirely oil, oxidative stability defines its quality: oils high in polyunsaturated fatty acids turn rancid easily and need tocopherol and light-blocking, airtight packaging. Oil choice should also take skin data into account: in a small study of 19 adults, applying olive oil twice daily for 4 weeks reduced stratum corneum integrity, while sunflower seed oil preserved it (Danby et al., 2013; the abstract does not state which type of sunflower oil was used). Butter-C offers full-service OEM/ODM manufacturing, from formula development and testing to labeled finished product with its notification dossier.
Formula base
An anhydrous oil blend with an antioxidant
After-bath oil is usually an anhydrous (water-free) blend of plant oils, esters and hydrocarbons, so no emulsifier system is needed. Because it contains no water, the formula usually has no preservative (formulation practice); a conclusion of low microbiological risk must be backed by a written assessment under ISO 29621 in the safety file. A product used in the bathroom may get water into the bottle from wet hands, so whether a preservative challenge test is needed is decided for each formula and pack.
Plant oils
Sunflower oil — the high-oleic type is more oxidation-stable; high-oleic oil may carry its own INCI name, Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil, so it is labeled according to the certificate of analysis (COA). Jojoba oil (chemically a liquid wax ester) was more oxidation-stable than olive, sunflower and rosehip oils in an accelerated oxidation test at 100 °C (Fagoaga et al., 2026).
Light, stable oils
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (MCT oil) has very few unsaturated components; squalane; refined mineral oil does not turn rancid as easily as plant oils. Mineral oil is used only with refining documentation that meets the condition in ASEAN Annex II.
Esters and silicones to cut greasiness
Isopropyl Myristate, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate and Dimethicone help the oil dry to the touch faster and leave fewer oil marks on clothing (formulation experience).
Antioxidant
Tocopherol is added as soon as the oil phase is blended, combined with light-blocking packaging and minimal headspace.
Fragrance
Fragrance-free, or a very light scent in a separate version; strong essential oils are avoided.
Key technical points
Four factors that define after-bath oil quality
No rancidity over the shelf life
Oils low in polyunsaturated fatty acids, plus tocopherol; peroxide value, acid value and odor are tracked in the stability study.
Moderate after-feel
Enough film to keep skin soft without leaving a heavy oil layer on skin, clothes or bed linen; heavier oils are balanced with light esters.
Apply while skin is slightly damp
The article on older adults' skin advises moisturizing right after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp; oil also spreads more easily on freshly towel-dried skin (practical experience).
Limiting slip hazards
Not for use as a bath oil and not to be added to bath water. Directions to apply after stepping out of the tub or shower area, standing or sitting on a dry surface; a dosing cap so each use takes only a little oil; a slip warning on the label. This is practical guidance, not a regulation.
Three formulation directions
Three common after-bath oil lines
Fragrance-free sunflower–MCT oil
High-oleic sunflower oil, MCT oil, tocopherol; a simple base at a reasonable cost with a plant-oil story.
Dry-touch oil
MCT oil, squalane, light esters, dimethicone; absorbs quickly with little shine, suited to hot, humid climates and users who dislike an oily feel.
Refined mineral oil for care facilities
Refined mineral oil blended with MCT oil: stable, no base odor, low cost per liter; requires refining documentation under ASEAN Annex II.
Packaging is planned with the formula
A flip-top cap or dosing pump, a bottle that is not slippery to hold with oily hands, light-blocking; no spray format, to limit oil reaching the floor. Large-print label with a slip warning.
Parameters we monitor
What our R&D lab measures on every sample
These are the parameters Butter-C monitors while developing the formula and scaling it up to production. Specific limits are agreed with you on the approved sample and then written into the product's in-house specification.
- Peroxide value, acid value
- Measured on incoming raw materials and on the finished product during the stability study; finished-product limits are set from the formula's own stability data.
- Odor and color
- Rancid odor and color change are monitored at room temperature and 40°C, with and without light.
- Clarity at low temperature
- Some oils such as jojoba can cloud or solidify in the cold; checked at low temperature.
- On-skin assessment
- Spreadability, dry-down time, shine, oil marks on fabric.
- Microbiology
- Tested at a GLP / ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
- Packaging compatibility
- Filled into the actual bottle to be used; leakage at the cap and pump and bottle deformation after prolonged contact with oil are checked.
Claims
Writing claims within the cosmetic scope
A body oil stays within the cosmetic scope when claims stop at moisturizing and softening. For older users, the directions and warnings on the label need to be as clear as the benefit claims. Butter-C reviews the wording on the label and marketing materials as soon as the notification dossier is prepared.
Softens skin, helps it feel less dry and rough
Instead of: claims to repair the skin barrier or to act on skin disease.
Moisturizes dry skin
Instead of: claims about itching, or about stopping or reversing skin aging.
Fragrance-free
Stated only when the formula contains no fragrance.
Directions
Apply to towel-dried or slightly damp skin after bathing, once out of the bathing area; do not pour into the bathtub or bath water.
Slip warning
Oil makes floors and tubs slippery: wipe up any spills; people with limited mobility should have assistance. This warning is recommended practice: the ASEAN Annexes do not require it for the oils in the formula. Label wording is agreed with you.
General warnings
For external use only; do not apply to scratched or bleeding skin; stop use if the skin becomes red or itchy.

Suggested product concept
Fragrance-free sunflower–MCT after-bath oil
A product concept to help you picture the possibilities — not a ready-made product for sale. The actual formula is developed to match your brand positioning and price range.
High-oleic sunflower oil
Softens the skin; the high-oleic type is chosen for better oxidative stability, with fatty acid composition checked on the COA.
MCT oil
A light, less greasy oil with very few unsaturated components.
Tocopherol, fragrance-free
An antioxidant for the oil phase; no fragrance.
200 ml light-blocking flip-top bottle
A small amount per use; a large-print label with a slip warning and directions to apply after leaving the bathing area.
